The band explains the inspiration behind the song:

“There are times when we lose someone we love to addiction or mental illness, and there’s no funeral to be had. Everyone’s still alive, but the connection is gone. For me, that’s what resonates about ‘The Day You Slipped Away’—the closure you must give yourself when there’s none to be found.”

The song delves into the emotional stages of grief, especially when losing someone unexpectedly. The band further elaborates, “Denial is represented by the chorus line, ‘wore white to your funeral ’cause I didn’t want to cry,’ and guilt is addressed with the line, ‘what do I say to those that you have left behind?’ The track explores these stages of grief and the anger that often accompanies them.”
