Album Review: THANATOTHERION - "Alienation Manifesto"

I, Voihanger Records proudly presents "Alienation Manifesto," the debut album from THANATOTHERION, a new force in the metal scene brought to life by guitarist/vocalist Ominous Droning (Shelby Lermo) of ULTHAR, NAUGHTSKEID, and VASTUM, alongside the masterful drumming of Jason Bursese (BLACK FUCKING CANCER). This project takes the raw energy and intensity of NAUGHTSKEID and channels it into a ferocious black thrash metal sound, blending Lovecraftian horror, the grandeur of early EMPEROR, and the destructive fury of ABSU.

From the haunting cover art by Daniel Vega to the intricate musical compositions, "Alienation Manifesto" is a declaration of disdain for humanity and a vision of a post-human world. Ominous Droning's liner notes reveal the album's concept: the cessation of human life and the flourishing of non-human species in a balanced, technology-free world. This theme permeates the album, creating a dark, sinister atmosphere that is both otherworldly and eerily beautiful.

The album opens with "Red Cathedral," a blistering track that sets the tone with its aggressive riffs and relentless drumming. The production is raw yet clear, allowing the intricate guitar work and atmospheric elements to shine through. The following track, "The Raven and the Box of Stars," delves deeper into the Lovecraftian influence with its expansive and haunting melodies, clocking in at over six minutes of pure black thrash brilliance.

"Orb" and "Wilczyca" showcase THANATOTHERION's ability to blend speed with melody, creating a sound that is both chaotic and controlled. "Nuclear Womb" stands out with its ominous, apocalyptic vibe, painting a vivid picture of the album's thematic core. The instrumental "Lament" offers a brief but poignant respite before plunging back into the darkness with "Codex Crepusculum," the album's closing track, which encapsulates the essence of "Alienation Manifesto."

Ominous Droning's multi-instrumental talents are on full display, with his work on vocals, guitar, bass, keys, samples, and noise creating a rich, layered sound. Jason Bursese's drumming is a powerhouse of precision and brutality, driving the album's relentless pace. The production, handled by Ominous Droning and Bursese, is raw yet meticulous, capturing the essence of the genre while pushing its boundaries.

"Alienation Manifesto" is not just an album; it's a statement. It's a funeral veil draped over humanity, its guilt, and its shame, yet within its nihilistic folds lies a message of rebirth in the stillness of a benevolent darkness. For fans of ABSU, EMPEROR, and ULTHAR, this album is a must-listen, offering a fresh take on black thrash metal that is both innovative and deeply rooted in the genre's traditions.
