Could a Sepultura Reunion Happen? Andreas Kisser and the Cavalera Brothers Are Open to the Idea

Fans of the legendary metal band Sepultura might have reason to hope for a reunion of the classic lineup. Longtime guitarist Andreas Kisser and former frontman Max Cavalera have both expressed openness to the idea of performing together once more, possibly at one of the band's farewell shows. While nothing is confirmed, the possibility is tantalizing for metal enthusiasts worldwide.

In a recent interview with Metal Hammer, Kisser discussed the potential for a reunion with the Cavalera brothers, emphasizing that it would need to be a positive and celebratory event. "I won't deny that it would be great to have a very last show with their participation, but it has to be great," Kisser stated. "It has to have people who are there to celebrate and not trying to discuss who was right or wrong on decisions from the past. In the end, we are celebrating now as the Sepultura of today. If they want to be a part of it, it would be amazing."

Kisser's comments come in response to Max Cavalera's recent interview with Rock Hard Greece, where Cavalera revealed he hasn't been approached about a reunion but remains open to the idea. Cavalera also referenced Kisser's previous remarks about a reunion potentially spoiling the party, which he acknowledged as typical of their long-standing dynamic.

"I have not [been approached]," Cavalera said. "In fact, I think I saw one thing Andreas, of course said, like, 'Why are we gonna ask them? They're gonna spoil the party,' which is very typical of Andreas to say that."

Despite this, Cavalera is not ruling out a reunion if it can be done the right way. "I don't know. I think I'm gonna let things happen the way they're gonna happen. I'm not gonna force anything, and if there comes a time where we feel that we should make a reunion — okay, fine, as long as we do it the right way. Just like with these re-recordings [of early Sepultura albums]. I think we made them the right way — honest, proper, from the heart."

Sepultura was founded in 1984 by Max Cavalera and his brother Igor Cavalera. Max departed the band in 1996 and was succeeded by vocalist Derrick Green. Igor remained with Sepultura until 2006, when he was replaced by Jean Dolabella. Since their departures, neither Max nor Igor have reunited with the band, though both have continued to make significant contributions to the metal scene through various projects, including Cavalera Conspiracy.

Reflecting on the band's impending end, Cavalera expressed confusion and a deep-seated need to continue playing music. "I know they announced the end of the band. I don't understand this idea. I don't know if they were forced to do it, or if it's a mutual decision of just stop playing 'cause you don't wanna do it anymore. I don't know. I myself cannot live without music. I need to play live. It's like the air I breathe."

While the future of a classic Sepultura lineup reunion remains uncertain, the willingness from both sides to consider it offers a glimmer of hope. As the band prepares for their farewell, fans can hold onto the possibility that they might witness one final, historic performance that includes the original members who helped define Sepultura's legacy in the metal world.
