The Brazilian death metal supergroup The Troops of Doom has just dropped their latest video single, "Chapels Of The Unholy," taken from their upcoming album "A Mass to the Grotesque." This eagerly awaited release is scheduled to hit the shelves on May 31, 2024, under the banner of Alma Mater Records, the label run by Fernando Ribeiro of Moonspell.
Formed in 2020 amidst the pandemic chaos, The Troops of Doom brought together Jairo "Tormentor" Guedz, the original guitarist from the seminal band Sepultura, and other prominent figures from the Brazilian metal scene. The lineup boasts talents like guitarist Marcelo Vasco, a well-known graphic artist who has collaborated with bands like Slayer and Kreator, alongside vocalist and bassist Alex Kafer and drummer Alexandre Oliveira.
Their sophomore album promises to be a nostalgic trip back to the golden age of death metal. Jairo Guedz shares, "We’ve chosen the track 'Chapels Of The Unholy' as our first single because it perfectly encapsulates the essence of the album and our direction with this new release. The song is intense and fierce, reflecting the roots of our death metal, while the lyrics explore the decay of faith and the darkness within the human mind."
Praise for the new single and the forthcoming album has already started pouring in from notable figures in the metal community. Mille Petrozza of Kreator comments, "The record sounds amazing! Old school as fuck! Taking me back to the glory days of Brazilian metal." Similarly, Øystein G. Brun of Borknagar expresses his enthusiasm, stating, "This one hits me hard and drags me straight back to the early '90s, to my youth, when death metal was still fresh, wild, and fierce!"
The production of "A Mass to the Grotesque" was handled by André Moraes, known for his work on Sepultura's "Dante XXI," and was recorded at Audio Porto studio in Porto Alegre. The album was mixed and mastered by Jim Morris at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, a studio legendary for shaping the sound of death metal in the '80s and '90s.
The album art, created by the renowned Dan Seagrave, known for his iconic death metal album covers, adds a visual element that complements the music's raw and unapologetic energy. With track titles like "Dawn of Mephisto," "Denied Divinity," and "Blood Upon The Throne," the album promises a deep dive into themes of blasphemy, darkness, and rebellion.
In support of their new release, The Troops of Doom are set to headline at the Summer Breeze festival in São Paulo this April, followed by their first European tour in August. These live performances are highly anticipated events where fans can expect to experience the sheer power and brutality of the band’s new material in its full glory.
Fans eager to lay their hands on "A Mass to the Grotesque" can pre-order the limited LP Vinyl edition and CD Digipack or pre-save a digital copy now. This album is not just a collection of songs but a statement, a beacon for the enduring spirit of death metal, preserved and now unleashed by The Troops of Doom.
