Sometimes, is there anything more stereotypical than one guy in corpse paint sat at his home studio creating black metal? This applies to Todverhexen, the brainchild of Rotserbaen who after a handful of demos has the Chilean musician delivering their debut studio album ‘Verbotene Hexerei’.
What the listener gets here with ‘Verbotene Hexerei’ is Todverhexen delivering an album which is so underground that it is expected to be six feet under with a headstone. From its very beginning soundbites of a medieval battle, ‘Verbotene Hexerei’ soon explodes into a cacophony of raw black metal delivering rapid fire tremolo picking and blast beats coupled with demonic shrieks from the very hounds of Hell themselves. Yet, ‘Verbotene Hexerei’ isn’t afraid to throw a curveball into the mix by introducing more ambient passages which features synths and acoustic guitars and it is this which really sets ‘Verbotene Hexerei’ apart from their peers. Through tracks such as ‘A Dying Sepulchral Mantle’, ‘Stigma der Nichtexistenz’ and the fantastic ‘Profanation of a Unnameless Tomb’, Todverhexen show that they have all the guile and enjoyability of Judas Iscariot, Drowning the Light and Wampyric with the vocals of Rotserbaen having the appeal of those early Emperor albums.
If you’re a fan of raw black metal, then there won’t be anything here that you haven’t heard already. However, ‘Verbotene Hexerei’ is a solid album of dark, medieval raw black metal which really hits the spot. Metal Digest
