We know very little about these Augur, except that it is a Colorado quintet formed in 2016, whose discography has so far been rather contained, counting only an ep and a split in the company of compatriots Ekelhaft. This “Omen” represents their debut on the long distance, strictly self-produced, and is an album with different nuances that, at the level of compositional influences, on the whole seems to look more at the classic North-European black metal matrix (but also of German area) that to the American tradition formed at the turn of the first two thousand years, which belongs to groups such as Judas Iscariot, Leviathan or similar, from which it also draws some ideas. The songs contained in this album are built on the alternation between lashing, fast, violent and aggressive parts and others more slowed and meditative, with the guitars that naturally pass from a glacial tremolo to sulphur melodies with a ritual flavor.

The rhythm section is ordered and follows this trend, adapting to the guitar plots, which remain the undisputed protagonists of the release, always in the foreground and at decidedly high volume, to dictate the changes of time and sound landscape that characterize the whole disc and also the individual pieces, never too predictable and built following more the emotional flow than the structures of the classic song form, which, moreover, remain present above all in the most square and pulled songs, such as the “Cing”. From this point of view, the Augur proposal reminded me in several situations not too far away that of the first Abigor or the Swedes N?strond, perhaps also for the atmosphere with an occult and medievalizing look that is breathed in different passages or for the not exaggerated but decidedly effective use of acoustic interludes that loosen the tension and create the right detachment when it is necessary.

The album proceeds smoothly and without particular falls of tone while remaining on a qualitative level more than acceptable for all its duration and goes to constitute a path to be followed in full through various chapters, until the conclusion with the title track and “In Glory Of Fire”, probably the most representative songs of what is the conception of black metal of the combo of the star and striped combo, within which there is also a limited but fascinating use of clean vocals from the timbro. What to say ultimately? “Omen” from the title is a record with an esoteric aftertaste that, without distorting anything or even less to make the miracle cry, will not disappoint the supporters of traditional black metal, played more on the atmosphere than on the impact. A listening is recommended. blackmetalistkrieg

Release Date: 7/28/23

FFO: Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Horna

Location: USA

In an ultimate force of pestilent cacophony, Augur unveils its self produced debut full length album. OMEN: A foretelling of pain, passion and the ultimate triumph of death. Bio: Drawing upon the innate, hopeless depravity of man and the painful intoxication of consciousness, we distill an ominous concoction of hate, aggression, poignance and triumph. Slaves only to the incessant thirst for profound catharsis of cacophony, we act in full autonomy from conception to final form and believe that it is through perseverance of materializing the essence of our passion that the true nature of our art takes form. Augur can only be described as the ultimate force of our collective nature.
