Stone Of Duna is a foursome of extremely skilled musicians from Sweden who must have thought; “What would it sound like if you threw prog and stoner into the metal mixer?” In other words, take a dash of Fu Manchu and combine it with Dream Theater, King's X and some side dishes.
The riffs are gritty fuzzed and low-pitched, but the drone often has slightly different dimensions or is slightly different in a proggy way. The drums, bass and guitar often do not follow the usual path and are often technically at a higher level. Fortunately, there is still enough compelling drive to not become a musician's nonsense; Even though this is not suitable for every moment or all moods, this can also be very enjoyable for the listener who does not make music at a high level. The voice is melodic and skilled in vocal lines that dare to deviate from the standard path, but certainly appropriate and attractive, as can be the case especially with the better prog rock and metal. Some absolute listening tips: Deathbright and The Seven Aspect Snake, both because of their sublimely floating, quieter passages with beautiful bass lines between all that technical musical bombast.
The artwork of the songs on their Bandcamp and to illustrate YouTube videos is also masterful. So far, I think the band has everything in-house, and the digital album can only be purchased through their Bandcamp. Surely this record would be worth releasing on vinyl! Perhaps for a greater reach it is worth considering a distributor, because there must be a very decent audience for this. rockportaal
Release Date: September 22 2023
FFO: Tool, Mastodon, Red Fang
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Stone of Duna from Gothenburg, Sweden, was formed in the fall of 2021 when the three childhood friends Max, David and Arvid teamed up with Marcus, former guitarist and lead clean vocalist of the band Grimner. Over the course of roughly a year, they developed a sound that could be described as stoner metal with more progressive elements, or as to band likes to put it: "sh*t we like to listen to". Their first full-length release "Moonsplitter" is due on September 22. It's a journey through fantastical lyrics, gnarly bass tones, catchy vocal melodies and heavy riffage with a healthy dose of fuzz.
