In the grand scheme of genres, blackened death can be a little bit of a funny one. Realistically, what classes as it? We could argue for days about it. Semantics of the genre aside, one band who have been forging a path in this sound are Sathanas who have delivered their 11th studio album ‘Psalm Satani’.
What Sathanas deliver here with ‘Psalm Satani’ is an album which much like Necrophobic, isn’t afraid to deliver their sound with a healthy amount of thrash metal. This is then slid into the pot with the blackened death sound, refined and precise, cold and calculating and knows exactly which bit to assault. Through just eight tracks clocking in at just over half an hour, ‘Psalm Satani’ isn’t fucking about. It gets in and out with as much damage as it can do in that time frame and because of that, this album never outstays its welcome. Through tracks such as ‘Altar of Heaven’, ‘Calling Forth the Darkness’ and ‘Blood of the Seraphin’ show that although Sathanas have all the enjoyability of Evil Incarnate, Acheron and Vader, they can easily stand upon their own two feet with a sound which can equal any of their contemporaries. Furthermore, those fans who like things a little more death or black will even be brought on board with ‘Psalm Satani’ with nods towards both Impaled Nazarene and Vital Remains.
There is nothing here that Sathanas offer which isn’t unexpected of them and that certainly isn’t a bad thing. If you’re a fan of black/death with a large heap of thrash metal, then ‘Psalm Satani’ will be right up your street.
