Hailing from France, Frozen Arch, primarily a one-man project led by multi-talented Loïc Malassagne, is on the brink of capturing the essence of heavy metal, hard rock, and progressive metal with their new self-released single, "Headwind". Scheduled for release on September 1, 2023, the track unveils a sonic narrative and serves as a precursor to a much-anticipated future album.
The genesis of "Headwind" started from a straightforward intro riff, unfolding naturally into a composition imbued with a combative message. Loïc shares, "The elaboration of the composition simply started from the intro riff, the rest came naturally by deliberately wanting a somewhat Power Metal chorus in line with the combative message."
Rooted in a broad spectrum of heavy metal, Loïc's compositions often unintentionally reveal his 80s influences, moulded into a distinctive style. He elucidates, "My culture is rooted in heavy metal in the broad sense of the term… all these 80's influences probably come out unconsciously but in my own way. The progressive touch of this project does not lie in the length of the title but in the variation of the parts and the arrangements."
Guest artists Grim Riffer, guitarist of the French band Onirik Illusion, and Jim D. play pivotal roles in shaping the final sound of "Headwind". Loïc comments on their collaboration, "I generally work and compose on Jim D's drums… and concerning Grim Riffer, I invited him because his style and feeling fit perfectly. It also appears in other compositions."
"Headwind" teases the stylistic diversity that fans can expect in the upcoming album. Loïc hints, "The other titles have these same elements but with different nuances, some are more Heavy or faster, others more Progressive, the next single for example will be more direct."
Frozen Arch has drawn comparisons to the likes of Queensrÿche and Saxon, an analogy Loïc finds encapsulates more the energy of the music than a direct likeness. "It's not really a comparison but people who like these bands among so many others will perhaps like what I propose," he states, reinforcing the unique identity of Frozen Arch's sound.
The single’s title, "Headwind", is deeply symbolic, representing the battle against challenging times and the external pressures of the world. Loïc elucidates, "The message behind this title is the fight against these difficult moments close to the depression that we can all live but also fight against this headwind that this anxiety world imposes on us. Face this storm of dark thoughts and stay strong."
Recorded and produced at Pleine Lune Studio by Loïc Malassagne himself, "Headwind" is not just a musical journey but also a testament to resilience and strength in facing one’s own storms. With a fusion of genres and a touch of progression, it offers a glimpse into Frozen Arch’s creative prowess and sets the stage for what’s next in their musical expedition.
Whether you are a seasoned fan of heavy metal and hard rock or new to the genre, Frozen Arch's "Headwind" is a symphony of resilience and battle against the darkness, deserving a spot on every discerning listener's playlist.
