Human taxidermy sounds fairly unpleasant, so when you discover its the tital of the new record from New York brutal death metal band Gutted Alive, I suppose it makes a twisted kind of sense. These guys have been crushing brains and skulls for over a decade now, and ‘Human Taxidermy’ is their fourth full length. It is out now through CDN Records.

Gutted Alive barely release anything over 30 minutes so the idea that ‘Human Taxidermy’ is a mere 22 minutes seems to be condensed even by their standard. Opener ‘Burial Voyeur’ shreds, growls and blasts its way into your conscious, while a distinctive enjoyment for old Both Thrower and chuggier Obituary is found in the guttural ‘Butchered in the Woodshed’. You’ve got an unholy chugging breakdown in the visceral ‘Flesh Stretched Leather’, and yet more of that old Both Thrower feel in ‘Hoarder of the Dead’. The rolling riffs and brutal low end, as well as a focus on a weighty groove rather than just a frenzy of technicality gives Gutted Alive a nice stroke of individuality in their chosen subgenre. There are some faster, technical moments but nothing is more sacred than the groove. Except probably many human victims…

If you are a fan of some old school tech brutality, like Suffocation’s early work, you’re going to find a lot to love here. ‘Human Taxidermy’ may be a little short, but it makes up for it with pure ferocity throughout. There isn’t really even that much pig squealing either, which is always an issue I have with brutal death metal. Of course there is some, but the majority is a guttural roar. Gutted Alive are great, bloodsoaked fun and ‘Human Taxidermy’ is another impressive outcome. thoseonceloyal

Gutted Alive was started in Rochester, NY in 2012 as The Gutted. Ryan Michael (vocals) and Jason Acquilano (guitar, vocals) were shortly joined by Brandon Graves (drums) and Mike Sloma (bass). Shortly before signing to CDN Records they changed to Gutted Alive. Adam Shampine joined on bass in 2017 following Mike's departure. In 2020 Joe Tash replaced Adam, and in 2021 Rick Smith joined on second guitar. Fans of brutally fast riffs and mean grooves; their music is intense and catchy. Now dropping their fourth album titled "Human Taxidermy" with CDN Records, Gutted Alive continues to push forward in the medium and explore macabre subjects.
