There’s an absolute sea of Deathcore/Death Metal acts out there; some say they’re ’progressive’, some say ‘technical’, whilst others would quite like you to stop calling them ‘Deathcore’ altogether. Being something interesting and special in this metaphorical ocean, then, is not a simple task
A good way to do this is to make significant use of strong melodic hooks and overarching progressions in an almost symphonic style, and that’s what Shores of Acheron have elected to do with their return after a 6+ year hiatus since debut album ‘Ira’, which allows the casual listener a hook to hum along with, despite the crushing intensity of the surrounding music.
Certainly, it would be difficult to sing along, as Zakk Evans’ vocal lines are delivered via deep, intense growls and a fry scream more chilling and dark than the sounds of tortured souls in a lake of fire. Few vocalists in modern metal can match the dynamic intensity here; and it’s not like the rest of the band are slacking either. This is a properly tight release, and with its 21-minute runtime, is a perfect snippet of the heavier side of modern Deathcore. Metal Digest
