Frozen Wreath - Mea Culpa - Featured & Interviewed By Pete Devine! https://petesrocknewsandviews.com/frozen-wreath/
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
Zoltan: We are quite normal people who just happen to play atmospheric black metal music. Of course, we have our dark sides, which we interpret into our music, but otherwise we live normal lives. As a band, we play black metal in the style of the ‘90’s era. Our songs are full of melodies, but there is also sadness, a kind of depressing feeling in the songs. We try creating our own musical world; we do not really copy any of the bands out there. I believe our music is unique and I hope it will find the way to the people who are looking for something original.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
Zoltan: I am from Hungary, I live here, but I spent a long time in London, as well. Roland lives not far from here, in a small village, away from the world. I am a metalhead, since I was 11 years old, when I got a tape with full of metal music. I always loved metal, but actually started playing quite late, when I was about 20 years old. I purchased a really shit guitar and immediately started writing my own songs. After discovering black metal, I formed my first band and the rest is history.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
Zoltan: I do not really need inspiration to write music, but I really like composers who create in variety and do not stick to one certain style. Apart from music, I like all kind of movies and like reading, so I guess these all make into my subconscious. I am responsible for music and Roland is for the lyrics. Musicwise, for me is very simple. What comes that comes. If it is good, stays; if not, goes. There is only one rule for me: every song must have a certain atmosphere.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
Zoltan: Always write a song, which I am satisfied with. If I like it, then I do not really care, if it fits in any category. Of course, I want to be always better. I would like to write better songs with better sound, as I am responsible for the mixing and the mastering, too. There is always a lot to learn in any aspect of life.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
Zoltan: I am proud of every single song, what we finished. The proudest moment is when we release a new album. That is always a good feeling. We did it, we created something, again. I really enjoy any support towards the band, any good comment or review. Small things like these make me really proud.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
Zoltan: Filosofem Records, which releases the Frozen Wreath albums, is Roland’s own label. He is doing the promotion work, but I can see all the hard work behind it. It is not easy. It is a constant job, you have to promote your stuff as hard as you can. You have to use social networks (like it or not) and it is not a bad thing, if you have some spare money to invest in the promotion. Unfortunately, for a small band like us, there is no other way. Times are already gone, when a big record label offered you a record deal. Nowadays, you must have thousands of supporters before they will even talk to you. Roland has learned a lot about promotions over the years, so Frozen Wreath is in good hands.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
Zoltan: We are a two-men band, so we do not do live shows and I do not think that will change in the near future.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
Zoltan: You know, I am an old-timer, but I think we must go with the world. If the world changes, we have to assimilate to that. Of course, I prefer physical copies, but I have to accept the fact that lots of people using streaming sites or download music online. I could whine about it, but would not change a thing. If people want to listen my music on Spotify, then be it, our music is also there. Luckily, a lots of metalhead still buying CDs and LPs or tapes, so physical release still makes sense.
PD: What song do you wish you'd written and why?
Zoltan: That is a weird question. I do not think there is such song. There are many great songs or albums out there, but I am not envy that I did not write them. I wish I could write such great albums, but that is another thing.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
Zoltan: Difficult question. Music industry, as any other moneymaking business, is disgusting. The big labels do not really care about the music itself, they want to make as much money as possible. True music is at the small labels, but they are struggling to get their music out there. The best interface nowadays is Bandcamp, you can find real gems there. I wish big labels were still searching for talents in the underground and would take some risk to support them.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
Zoltan: We are promoting our latest album ‘Mea Culpa’. It was just recently released and there are tons to do. We try to get the album to so many people as possible. Hopefully many interviews to come, sending promo packages for reviews, etc. The album is out now and I believe in it, I really like this record, now we get other people to discover it for themselves. The next step for Frozen Wreath is a possible EP, but it is too early to get into any details. Meanwhile, Roland will release the new Vrag album in the near future and he is also working on a new WitcheR release.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
Zoltan: We are on all major social media and streaming platforms. The easiest way to buy our products is on Bandcamp. See all the links below. Thank you for the interview and a big gratitude for all our supporters.
Release Date: 13. September, 2023.
FFO: Dimmu Borgir, And Oceans, Catamenia
Location: Hungary
All hope is gone: the second album of the atmospheric black metal band FROZEN WREATH is out now, entitled ‘Mea Culpa’! The Hungarian atmospheric black metal duo FROZEN WREATH released their second album ‘Mea Culpa’, after previously introducing the record with a truly dark and depressing music video. The concept album includes 7 songs in nearly 50 minutes. All the lyrics are about suicide, but from different kind of aspects; meanwhile musicwise the band still plays in the style of the second half of the 90’s black metal, in the same vein as old Dimmu Borgir, And Oceans or Catamenia. Filosofem Records released the album on CD, but it will be soon available on all streaming platforms!
