The other day while merrily driving through town I caught a glimpse of a lady wearing a Copacabana t-shirt. A nanosecond later and I’m humming along to an old 1970’s song by crooner Barry Manilow. If your brain works like mine you’ll know all about the dreaded ear worm. Arriving home a short time later, and desperate for some ear worm infestation treatment I got my first listen to the Sun Raven album Liberation. What a treat to get the old brain working again.

Sun Raven comprises of Stephen Murray, guitarist, bass player, keyboardist and drummer. Bells and whistles no doubt but no doubting a lot of talent. The opening track ‘Through the Darkness’ though short is a ripper and a nicer taster for what’s to come. From the beautifully melodic ‘Searching’ to the heavy metallic ‘Gauntlet’. Definitely a treat for the old ears.

Though totally instrumental I think it’s a great album. Combining progressive metal with subtle melodies is no easy feat but mastered here. I look forward to hearing more. Metal Digest
