Obsidian Shrine - Consortium In Diaboli (Split with Sôlt) - Reviewed By zwaremetalen ! Check it out here at this link: https://zwaremetalen.com/albumrecensies/solt-obsidian-shrine-consortium-in-diaboli
A split with two American black metal bands that present themselves in their own style. That is on the agenda for today. Divided into three songs per band and with a total length of twenty-eight minutes. In terms of theme, Sôlt seems to focus more on nihilism, human failure and personal difficulties. Obsidian Shrine, on the other hand, is a bit more traditional in nature. Anti-religious Satan worship and hatred are at the forefront. Interesting to see if we also hear this on a musical level.
Neither band has been reviewed on Heavy Metals before, while Sôlt has been around since 2020 and has debut album Voidsick in its pocket. The companions of Obsidian Shrine have been around just a little longer as a band, since 2017 and have released the demo Infernal and two full albums, Anno Domini Satanas and Bloodshed Under the Black Star .
The first three songs are for Sôlt . With Through Crooked Angles they kick off the striker. We hear a short piece of acoustic guitar strumming, after which the game immediately continues at a high tempo. Furious and with a lot of persuasive power, the gentlemen know how to impress. A ferocious black metal scream that is not too high for once (which makes it sound somewhat intelligible) in combination with raging drumming and dark, yet melodic guitar riffs, those are just about the ingredients. Don't expect hypnotic, self-repeating black metal. Angry, very tightly played unholy music with sometimes some room for dissonant guitar work.
There are seldom times when vocals are not heard. It happens briefly during the second song A Dying Age , where Sôlt shows to lean towards blackened thrash in addition to black metal. The atmosphere, on the other hand, is unmistakably dark. That is certainly the case during the third track Our Lady of Pestilence , when the melodic escapades with awe-inspiring black metal screams are alternated with hyperspeed black. Soltcertainly knows how to surprise with its three songs on this split, which does not quite match the aforementioned description. We expected a bit more downbeat nuances, but none of this. With full conviction, the gentlemen ram the music through the loudspeakers, without any difficulties and with a fairly clear sound transmission.
Then it's Obsidian Shrine's turn . A roaring fireplace serves as the intro to Ubiquitous Opposition . Hell opens up when the first guitar and drumming is heard. Much sharper and more chaotic in nature than Sôlt , this band knows how to integrate a lot more thrash into its black. As expected, the sound is a bit dirtier and stickier. With the song Ubiquitous Opposition, the gentlemen actually immediately rip everything to pieces. The intentions of the band, also mentioned in the enclosed promo, are very clear. Showing hateful black metal for fans of Marduk , 1349 and Impaled Nazarene. The band was therefore inspired by the Scandinavian pioneers. Not very original, often on the shrill side, but still extremely effective. The bizarre speeds are apparently achieved effortlessly. In addition, the screaming guitar work during Call of Charon is to die for. The hysterical voice is not too bad in our opinion, but perfectly matching. To Dust You Shall Return also has such a wonderfully furious old-fashioned opening tune that keeps us on the edge of our seats.
In short, the second band on this split, Obsidian Shrine, does not disappoint either. You don't buy this split album with the title Consortium In Diaboli because of the urge to innovate, but simply to listen to pure chaotic and strong black metal, with a clear sound transmission, without losing any form of filth. zwaremetalen
