The days are currently getting longer and warmer. And despite the fact that a deathdoom album feels better suited to the dark season, autumn or winter, we still feel the need to take in dramatic and melancholic music all year round. Don't ask me why, it must have something to do with channeling emotions. Without releasing too much of a psychological analysis on this, we hear the sounds of musical therapist Ian Goetchius and his band Post Luctum . With The Indifference of Time: I, the American is ready for his second session (record). The debut with the catchy title Acceptance has not been tracked by us. So we immediately go for an in-depth investigation, especially when we see the titles of the songs on this album. Because let's face it: titles like The Pain of Hope , When Mourning Comes and Eternally Quiet don't bode well. And let that be exactly what the average deathdoom fan is looking for. Digging through enjoyable, sad music, in order to stimulate the psyche once again. A valley of tears like masochistic opium or something like that.
We believe that the deathdoom genre has spawned quite a few strong releases over the last few years. And in 2023 there seems to be no end to that. The great thing is that within the genre there is also a great variety of styles and influences. From the promo, the following bands are given for reference: Swallow the Sun , Ghost Brigade , Paradise Lost , Wolfheart. And the elongated and drawn-out melodies, with which a band like Swallow the Sun has put itself on the map, we certainly hear when listening to The Indifference of Time: I. Another observation is the fact that Post Luctum,as well as some of the mentioned bands, uses atmospheric acoustic guitar passages. This integration ensures that the impact of the reinforced pieces is all the greater. Ian Goetchius has recorded his vocals twice. These consist of a rather hoarse, not too deep grunt and a vocal that has more black metal nuances in it. As far as we are concerned, it needs no further explanation that this will only benefit the variation.
The keyboards have been cleverly played, coming from a keyboard or synthesizer, it sounds like. It remains undeniably an excellent instrument to use to enhance the atmosphere. And where songs like Avoidance , The Pain of Hope and When Mourning Comes emphatically look for the quiet (almost funeral doom) playing tempo, we hear during Don't Fear The Fading Light that the band also knows how to handle a faster piece of metal. Incidentally, we get more black associations than death metal pulsations. The short Moment of Silenceis mainly added to let the listener experience some peace, as the title suggests. With just a little strumming and spherical input through keyboard work, we feel completely fresh and fruity again for the closing track Eternally Quiet . And that is much needed too, because what a bucket of dirty rotten doom Mr. Goetchius is pouring out on us! This is a song that oozes misery. Whimsical guitar riffs, slow drumming and a thumping bass, interspersed with the previously heard acoustic guitar parts. Misery can come to the surface really beautifully, when the musician in question knows how to put his feeling into it. That setup has been successful across the board on this album! And then we are in the knowledge that The Indifference of Time: Ionly the first part of a trilogy. What else awaits us? In any case, we look forward to the second and third part with extraordinary interest.

Short Bio: Post Luctum is the moniker behind artist and songwriter Ian Goetchius, a musician with a focus on creating dark and haunting doom and death metal-inspired songs. Hailing from California, MD, USA.
This album is the first of a trilogy. "The Indifference of Time: I" is mostly rooted in doom/death metal and covers the beginning of the end for the protagonist with which the story will follow. Dealing with losing the one you love most is so extremely life altering (and life ending in some cases). Its even harder when you are watching it slowly happen over the coarse of days and struggling with denial, regret, and questioning selfishness verses selflessness while facing it.
