Ready your swords – and buy the ridiculous stage props – all ye of ren-faire and power metal disposition; there’s a new album from progressive purveyors of virtuosic power Metal Pyramid, and they’re back with a real statement of intent: this album’s entire second disc is a single 20 minute track called – wait for it – Dungeons and Dragons. Yep, that probably tells you all you need to know about what this is at its core. It’s chock-full of harmonised dual-leads, galloping and pounding basslines, huge and excessive synth strings, and vocal histrionics to challenge even Clare Torry.

And that’s not even the end of the ‘intense listening experience bingo’, as there’s distinct elements of Dream Theater-esque out-and-out prog metal, with complex sequences of meter changes, frenetic keyboard solos, and riffs that utilise the bits of the key that didn’t even realise they were part of the key in the first place. It all adds up into an experience that rewards the attentive listener, and one that surprisingly remains fairly accessible; the elements of Iron Maiden and Rainbow add a familiar element for even the most stuck-in-their-ways classic metalheads.

Overall, this is more listenable than first impressions may suggest, with a surprising depth that prog fans will appreciate. Metal Digest
