“Fury Of Five , do they still exist?” That was the reaction of a fellow editor when the promo of the EP Half Past Revenge fell on the digital doormat. I still knew about its existence, but I had also missed the fact that new music was released. Of course I immediately offered to listen to what the infamous band from New Jersey is producing nowadays.
Although I was too young to see the original line-up live in action on, for example, the illustrious Dynamo from the nineties, I listened to Fury Of Five a lot . The albums At War With The World and No Reason To Smile used to be on repeat. Even my wife knows Every Man For Himselfbecause I've lost count of how many times I've been singing that lyric at home because it was once again stuck in my head. I was therefore over the moon when a reunion tour finally came in 2015 and Hilversum was visited. Since this tour the band has been sporadically active in America, but I didn't expect that new music would be written. With a healthy dose of skepticism but also with adolescent enthusiasm I put on the new EP of one of my favorite youth bands .
WAR stands for We Are Ready and is the opening number. Frankly, this is directly the weak brother on Half Past Revenge . It just lacks that conviction that you hope to hear with Fury Of Five. Even the singer's typical vocal outburst lacks power. Feel The Reign, on the other hand, resembles the original sound with which the band has become so successful. The chorus could easily have been on the aforementioned At War With The World . In my opinion, however, it was unnecessary to look for the crass side after the rap part. Without that breakdown in between it probably would have been a better song.
Fortunately, Rev enge Doesn't Sleep immediately and effortlessly plays the recognizable mix of metal, hardcore and rap influences. Singer James Ismean comes out well this time. The influence of his typical voice on the sound of the band is simply undeniable. Even now I can't avoid comparing the new songs with the old ones. What is striking here, halfway through the fifteen minutes that Half Past Revenge takes up, is that there is a lot more “clunkiness” to be heard, of the kind of riffs and breakdowns that can often be found in bands like Hatebreed . Despite this, Revenge Doesn't Sleep, thanks to the rapping and screaming vocals in combination with this kind of riffs, became a nice whole and the best song on the EP.
Souls In The Soil starts with a quiet build-up, but soon the pumping riffs can be heard again. Lyrically it is about pistols, street violence and the sadness that comes with it, which of course fits perfectly with the street attitude that the band radiates. To close, Fury Of Five has chosen to re-record one of the hardest songs in the discography, and then of course I'm talking about Taste The Steel. This version does not sound as raw as on Telling It Like It Is from 1996. Without a doubt I prefer the original version, although this re-release fits perfectly next to the new songs in terms of atmosphere.
I can only conclude that this has become an entertaining EP in the end. Fury Of Five still has plenty of enthusiasm and conveys that in an infectious way to Half Past Revenge. However, I still prefer the music of the nineties. It just sounds a bit rawer and angrier. zwaremetalen
