What happens when members of Das Brute get together with ex-musicians of Nuclear Winter? Well, they form Dyspläcer and begin playing heavy/power metal and really dig into themes of shogun era Japan and release their debut album ‘Temple Heights’.

Japanese lore has found itself entwined with heavy metal for decades but more often than not, it’s a few songs here and there or finding itself fully immersed in the appropriation of the culture… looking at you Iron Maiden. But, through ten tracks here, Dyspläcer aren’t afraid to get into some real trad metal with enough leanings on power metal to expand their sound. With ‘Temple Heights’ Dyspläcer deliver these themes with panache and care, it isn’t fist pumping like Sabaton or in the realms of hypersonic like DragonForce; this is twin guitar harmonies and solid riffage where tracks such as ‘Lightning Fury Fist’, ‘Bloodsport’ and ‘Way of the Ninja’ show that Dyspläcer have all the enjoyability of Tokyo Blade and early Iron Maiden, but also enough of an undercurrent that would bring in fans of Enforcer, Wolf and Katana.

However, the main issue with ‘Temple Heights’ is that the songs here are just overly long. They’re much longer than they need to be and when the album clocks over an hour with ten tracks, there needs to be some trimming of the fat to make the album much leaner. Yet, the ideas are good here and any fan of trad metal will find something to enjoy. - metal-digest
