Andrea Milan, working under the long-term name of Fugit, returns with a new album harking back to the original incarnation as an Atmospheric Black Metal outfit, after a recent foray into Acoustic and Ambient compositions. Writing and performing every note on “Morphogenetic Fractal Hologram” showcases the multi-disciplinary talent of this Italian musician, there is drumming, guitar work, and shrieked and growled Black Metal vocals to match any you can mention.

With a natural flow to the compositions, the transitions from delicate and nuanced, to searing fury, (calling along at Shoegaze and Ambient along the way if needed) highlight the dramatic tension of the music to great effect. Nine songs in just over a quarter of an hour means nothing here drags or overstays its welcome. The tracking does put two of the most Deathgaze/Metalgaze songs back-to-back (Dysphoria, and the title track) slightly lessening their individuality, but otherwise the album is well paced and varied.

Where this album shines are the piano and keyboard parts. Written and recorded as if for a movie soundtrack, there is the intensity and invention of Clint Mansell or Reznor/Ross. “Il Volo Proibito” in particular has the cinematic thing nailed perfectly. The weakest link? Sometimes the spoken/soft sung vocals just sound too dull and uninspiring in context with the lush sonic variety surrounding them. But if you also find that the case, there is a full instrumental version of the album released in parallel on popular streaming services. Also, be on the lookout for sister project “Horror Soundscapes”, Andrea’s Doom/Drone counterpoint to the multifaceted world of Fugit.

Album highlight? “Starburst”. Cinematic Black Metal Cocteau Twins with orchestra. metal-digest
