Stormbreaker is a Finnish band born in 2021 on the initiative of Kolossus singer Petri Tarvainen who decided to give life to a solo project aimed at wide-ranging melodic metal. Over time the project took shape as a full-fledged band with a solid lineup that includes fellow vocalist Annie Kokkonen, guitarists Tuomi Virtanen and Jaakko Kauppinen, bassist Tatu Heikkinen and drummer Sami Ratilainen. The six members have active bands such as Decrowned, Nevicate, Kolussus, Margraf, Valkyer, Inharmonic… which have allowed them to acquire a great deal of experience over the years, until the recent release of the debut EP 'Vengeance'.

You have recently entered the European metal scene. How about starting by telling us about the origins of the Stormbreakers?
“(Tomi Virtanen) Stormbreaker's story began when Petri noticed another heavy metal musician at his workplace. An argument about musical projects quickly flared up and it didn't take long before they shared a studio and recorded some demos. When a couple of songs were ready he started looking for other musicians to involve and with whom to share an artistic journey. Once we started playing together we began to feel that we had created something that we wanted to hold on to and not let go – a real band that worked very well together.”
What terms would you use if you had to describe your sound to those who don't know you yet?
“We simply define our music as energetic melodic metal, because our songs have great impact and continuous atmosphere, with powerful vocals and fast guitar solos!”
What are your main influences?
“Many metal bands, like In Flames, Diablo, Amaranthe, Beast in black (just to name a few) have influenced our music. Our lyrics come from real life, human destinies, grievances and so on”
What are the emotions behind Stormbreaker's music?
“For our themes we look for intriguing and profound destinies of humanity, which arise, for example, from the balance between love and betrayal or from the fight against injustice and destruction”.
Can you introduce us to the new EP 'Vengeance'?
“The EP 'Vengeance' consists of four energetic melodic metal songs, all featuring catchy melodies and expert soloing. All themes are wrapped up in the word “revenge”, albeit in different ways”.

What were the goals you set yourself when you started working on the new record?
“Our main goals were to see what we can do with our new lineup and to share the result with the rest of the metal world. We are happy with 'Vengeance' and have now learned how well the band work together!”
How long did it take to write and record the album?
“Some songs were written before all the band members were even found, but let's say the EP took a year or so, Stormbreaker formed in the middle of the pandemic and that slowed everything down a bit. Just think that our first concert will be held in La Barre, Joensuu, Finland on March 25, 2023. The wait is finally over!”.
Do you consider your music as art, entertainment or both?
“Definitely both! The art is about expanding the boundaries, using the imagination, giving meaning to the songs and relying on the flow of the process. It's something we do for ourselves. Entertainment is more about sharing that joy with others and allowing everyone to have a piece of what we've created."
Is there any song you are particularly attached to?
“(Years) 'Throne' is an important song for me because it sat in my drawer for many years before I met the right band to fit into. However, 'Silence=Death' is a song about how to get in touch with your true passion after all the obstacles life has thrown your way (for example, not being able to get on stage for so many years cause of the covid!), So this theme is very close to me”.
“(Petri) 'Silence=Death' because his riff has been looking for the right place for some time and finally we found the right song for it”.
“(Tomi) I created a solo part of 'Throne' many years ago and it was a natural addition. It's always nice when old songs finally come to life."

What is the most valuable thing you learned while writing, recording and releasing the album?
“That life should be more about rock 'n roll than stressing over stupid things. Making music together can be fun and still very rewarding.”
How was 'Vengeance' received by the metal community?
“The feedback has been very positive and people are looking forward to the new record! We've had great reviews from various metal media outlets and we're thrilled about it!”
Finland has always been the mother of great metal bands. What is the situation of the scene today?
“We think the Finnish metal scene is still quite thriving and it's certain that there was demand for a band like ours. However we are a little worried if young people can still be attracted to seeing live shows or if we are defeated by social media and streaming services… But we are confident that rock'n roll will live on!”.

Stormbreaker is a six-member energetic melodic metal band from Eastern-Finland that was founded 2021. Itse was born from a solo project that Petri Tarvainen from Kolossus band had been working on. As the time went on the project took shape as a real band with a solid lineup. The members share an undeniable passion for playing metal music, and it has forged them together despite their 25-40 age range. The members have multiple bands from the past and the present that have gained them loads of experience over the years. The debut EP Vengeance will be released on the 20th of January 2023.
