Cast your eyes over and out towards the cold sea as the rain lashes down around you. From a bar on the dockside comes the punkish tones of grunge, but this isn’t Seattle, this is Helsinki, and that grunge sound is Scarlet. It may have been 25 years in the making but finally, Scarlet are delivering their debut album ‘Circle of Bones’.

As an album, ‘Circle of Bones’ would easily convince somebody that this album was released in 1996. This is a warm, familiar album of nostalgic sounds as alternative rock from a different era comes knocking. What Scarlet deliver here isn’t an album of en vogue ‘grunge’ covered in pastel colours of a TikTok generation, this is old school alt rock drenched in plaid and self-loathing. Therefore, these Finns have all the likeability of Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam, but also pushes into the post grunge areas of Creed, Live and early Nickelback particularly as vocalist Ville Tuomi doesn’t half do a decent impression of Ed Kowalczyk. Furthermore, this is not a release which isn’t afraid to get heavy and at its darkest and most bowel rattling, ‘Circle of Bones’ touches on the heaviest of Alice in Chains and even Type O Negative and Soundgarden.

There isn’t anything here that grunge hasn’t done before which means it won’t suddenly cause a conversion to the genre; but those versed in the ways of alt rock should check this out because it really does a veteran quality to it. - Metal Digest
