Black metal and hardcore punk may not be the most regular of bedfellows, but stranger things have happened. Therefore, to pull this melding off requires some meticulous skill and patience or do you? Do you not just get both genres and bash them together until it works? Well, Anachronistic have been going at it hard for their debut album ‘700 and 19 Ways of Decay’.
For a debut album, ‘700…’ is not fucking around. With just eight tracks in little over 31 minutes, this is Anachronistic laying their cards on the table and showing that when it comes to whacking these genres together ‘700…’ is done very well and provided through a production and mix which plays entirely into their hands. Yes, it is raw, but would this really sound as good with a polished production? The answer is no. However, ‘700…’ is far from your normal black metal themes of licking Satan’s jungle bridge whilst burning down your local Co-Op. This is an album which really shows the dislike that Anachronistic have for paperwork… and office work in general because realistically we all know that paperwork is the trve kvlt devil. Juxtaposing this is the secret to surviving paperwork, alcohol and this is where the hardcore punk comes to play because through shit-kicking riffs and alcohol soaked lyrics from the likes of ‘Time to Drink’ show a band with all the appreciation of Municipal Waste without ever leaving their roots of Aura Noir, Behemoth and Blood for Blood behind.
Realistically, ‘700…’ is what ‘700…’ does. There isn’t time to think of the future or of the past, get it done now. This isn’t the sort of album that has a longevity planned, it is very much in the moment, but it does what it does very well, if you like black metal with a hardcore punk twist, cool… if not, Anachronistic won’t give a fuck either way. - Metal Digest
