When Killjoy sadly passed away in 2018, it meant that Necrophagia called it day and this year has guitarist Serge Streltsov stepping back into the musical arena with their latest music project Selfgod. Once again, Selfgod strolls down the vista of death metal as the Pittsburgh musician adds in a black metal onslaught with their debut album ‘Born of Death’.

                As an album, ‘Born of Death’ is a triumphant delivery of black/death metal. This means that through a real aggressive barrage of death metal, through roaring thrashing riffage pitted against rhythmically pounding blastbeats which come together to drive this album forward and really do show the talent that Streltsov has got and the mastery of the craft that is demonstrated with ‘Born of Death’. This is easily seen on this album as through tracks such as ‘Fire Tsar’, ‘Veles’ and ‘Morena’ show that Selfgod have all the appeal of Hate and Belphegor as well as those early Behemoth releases whilst actually doing its best to retain a large semblance of their own identity.

                There is nothing here that hasn’t been done before. But ‘Born of Death’ delivers this sound very well and if it’s done this well, who cares about sounding original? Metal recycles forever and if you’re looking for some black/death metal done well, then ‘Born of Death’ is a really good shout. - metal-digest

Short Bio: Selfgod is a new black/Death band fronted by Ex Necrophagia, Ex Automb guitarist Serge Streltsov. The band released a debut album in the winter of 2022 which features Scotty Fuller of Morbid Angel on drums.
