Review by Sandre the Giant
Pennsylvanian thrashers Cruel Bomb have just released their newest EP, and in the great tradition of ‘proper’ thrash, the album art is bright and lurid and the tunes are about nuclear war, destruction and everything else you need, wrapped in a denim battle vest and high tops. It is out now through Bandcamp.
‘Keystone Mosh’ kicks us into gear with a short, sharp chuggy thrash intro before ‘Dogs of War’ bursts into a breakneck gallop of rough and ready, crossover thrash. Insanely catchy, shout along choruses and a killer solo marks this out as an ode to the 80s Bay Area legends. ‘Bombed Squad’ reminds me of some Hatebreed tracks, although without the big dumb breakdowns and a much faster turn of pace, which turns out is a pretty good thing. In fact, it’s a fucking excellent thing because this has fast become one of my most played songs of 2022. ‘Stronger than Yesterday’ definitely has a more hardcore vibe to it, with a real big knuckle dragging breakdown in the middle that is very Madball while closer ‘A-10’ does what it needs to do to cap off this brilliant little EP.
‘Man Made’ may be pretty short (a mere fourteen minutes) but it’s a perfect introduction to the band for me, and it really scratches that crossover thrash itch that I get from time to time. Cruel Bomb are going to be a band that I’m going to pay more attention to in future, and it’s these little hidden gems that keeps me doing this stupid blog. Thrash until death! - The Killchain Blog
