SEVENTH SERVANT is the brainchild of former Iced Earth singer John Greely, who lent his voice to the 1992 classic “Night Of The Stormrider”. In 2006 he began work on The Tree Of Life, a concept album dealing with the Book of Revelation, but it is only now, sixteen years later, that the work has finally been completed.

Stylistically, the project is more in the classic (US) metal genre, there are occasional tendencies toward power metal, but without nearly reaching the vehemence of the singer's former field of activity. Instead, a lot of value is placed on melodies and their opulent implementation, especially through the use of keyboards. This sometimes leads to the fact that the guitars - with the exception of the solos - feel like they have to step back a little in some places. Also in terms of production there is certainly still room for improvement, as I simply lack a few depths here.

While the opener “Revelation” still gives the impression that the song itself is still searching for its purpose, the following “The Almighty One” is noticeably more direct to the point, but the big spark doesn't really jump over. Ditto for "Forevermore," although the song is inherently interesting thanks to its occasional progressive twists. The two longest tracks on the album are the most convincing. On “Jezebel” John Greely delivers a duet with Tim “Ripper” Owens, one of his later successors on Iced Earth. The mid-tempo number benefits both from the harmonious cooperation of the two singers and from the ability of the string group.

The heart of the album is the sixteen-minute "Open Door", which is partly quite leisurely, partly energetic and despite its length, there is not a single second of boredom. I could have featured the track on a Manilla Road disc. After that, the instrumental outro “Dialogismos” with piano and acoustic guitars wouldn't have been needed anymore.

I'm sure that John Greely put a lot of heart and soul into this project, the work on which it is based is simply too demanding for that, and sixteen years of development is really no small matter. Still, there are too few moments on “The Tree Of Life” that stick with you, apart from the exceptions mentioned. Unfortunately, the album doesn't go beyond pleasant approaches, fans of epic concept albums could maybe risk an ear.

I give it 6 out of 10 Hellfire points - Hellfire
