When I read Tim Aymar's name among the members of the unknown American band Helios, I swooped on the download to make the review. The Helios were active from 2016 to 2020 as Storm Dragon (name with which they released an EP in 2018), and then adopt the current name and self-produce in May 2022 this "Touch the sun", a disc composed of ten tracks for just over 3/4 of an hour of pleasant Heavy Metal with strong Power influences. The abrasive voice of the great Tim Aymar has remained almost unchanged since the golden age of Control Denied and distinguishes the sound as a real trademark, making it immediately recognizable among many other bands that play, good or bad, in the same way as the Helios. Having a good singer undoubtedly makes a huge difference, when you have an exceptional one, as in this case, then you can play it safe! But even on a purely instrumental level the Helios defend themselves more than well, with the bass of Jack Buckholt often excellent protagonist next to the pair of guitarists composed of Jonathan Stanley and Jeff Loy. The good drummer Eric Rymers, finally, does a remarkable job at the double speaker, often imposing sparkling and sustained rhythms. The songwriting of the band is effective, never long-winded and allows a smooth and pleasant listening, never complex, thanks also to a certain catchiness and a considerable attention to the melodies. Not surprisingly, one of my favorite songs is the slow "You knew it all along", a bittersweet ballad ideal for romantic moments. Next to it I must point out the tough "Keep it true", as well as the fiery opener "Fire from the sky" and the interesting "Kill you mother", with the excellent "Ancient one" to worthily seal the full-length. However, it is basically the whole album to be convincing (except perhaps some repetitive passages in "Mystery" and "Hellbender") and to show off a band with excellent potential. It is surprising once again how no label has yet realized the potential of Helios, forcing them to self-production and continuing to submerge us instead of musical garbage! At the moment it seems that this excellent "Touch the sun" is only made in digital version, it is to be hoped that some label will realize the value of the album and print it on CD! - Allaroundmetal
