The musicians of VICE from Manchester (UK) not only have a penchant for crisp titles, they are also not friends of quiet nuances. A clear sound language prevails on their second album "For The Fallen": modern thrash metal, enriched with metalcore elements. The trio tirelessly fires one energetic salvo after another and rarely takes the tempo out, but that doesn't mean that "For The Fallen" is boring. On the contrary, the interplay between clear vocals and harsh vocals works great and even catchy melodies are quite present with aggressive basic orientation. The drum fills, bass lines, solos and riffs can also be heard. The successful artwork, designed by Andy Pilkington, ties in motifs and in its color palette in apocalyptic brown tones to the debut "The First Chapter" from 2017, which dealt with the Seven Deadly Sins.
'Strive' is the perfect opener with first-class leads and juicy-fat riffs. 'Rise' immediately mills its way into the skull dome with its catchy chorus and staccato riffs. The subsequent 'Vultures' also knows how to please. The following songs have quality, although they are a little less catchy. 'Left Behind' impresses with a cool bass opening and fine leads, the title track closes the album worthily.
The stylistic comparison with TRIVIUM, which is drawn in the promo text, definitely has its justification, while only very distant echoes of the also mentioned combo LAMB OF GOD can be seen. In addition to MACHINE HEAD, SLAYER also seems to be an important influence; at least that's what the guitar work suggests.
The only point of criticism is that the production could have been a bit more airy. Because the drum sound is similar to the one that groups like FEAR FACTORY and MACHINE HEAD established in the mid-90s. Apparently, this is still considered desirable by many bands. On album length, however, at least for me, signs of fatigue set in in view of this sound image trimmed for maximum power. But that doesn't change the fact that "For The Fallen" is a successful album with some neckbreaker hits that will certainly bring the moshpit to a boil live. - POWERMETAL
