SLAYER is a legend. There is no doubt about that. For example, "Hell Awaits" was launched as early as 1985, an incredibly mature thrash fireworks display, and when fireworks prevailed a year later, the legendary status was clearly established. In the following years, works such as "South Of Heaven" and "Seasons In The Abyss" were added, in which the band let the fireworks move into the background, but still continued to act on the same level as on "Reign In Blood". Then came the difficult nineties, which many big bands did not survive unscathed. In the new millennium, old trademarks were gradually remembered and returned to old strength. But the death of Jeff Hanneman made the chemistry of the band even more difficult. So it happened that the butchers played their last concert in Inglewood in 2019 and stepped off the music business stage. They left behind a huge legacy that influenced bands of every generation. Be it the first death metal formations of the late 80s or even the first black metal institutions. Even nowadays you can make the term "thrash metal" clear to a metal newcomer with almost every song of the band.

So it is no coincidence that up-and-coming bands always come together and record a tribute album. We are now dealing with such a work. Involved in the round are DISINTER, DISTAL DESCENT, OVERT ENEMY, S.F. INCORPORATED, SKROG, EULOGY IN BLOOD, SLOKILL and BLOAT TOAD. All of the bands go from their own profession towards death and thrash metal. A black metallic approach might have been interesting.

Now we come to the tracklist, which is of course always important for such albums. SLAYER has released so many hits and legendary albums, it would be hard to combine everything important in one album, but with this album I have to say that the tracklist is the biggest weak point and biggest criticism. Sure, songs like 'Raining Blood', 'South Of Heaven' and 'Dead Skin Mask' were covered. But what about 'Angel Of Death', 'War Ensemble' and 'Seasons In The Abyss'. Such tracks should not have been forgotten. To the project's credit, "Show No Mercy" (title track) and "Hell Awaits" ("At Dawn They Sleep") were also taken into account. Even the album indexed in Germany was taken into account with the title track, which is actually a positive surprise. A surprise was also "Disorder". The track that was recorded with Ice-T at the time. Positive or negative is another question. Good albums like "Christ Illusion", "World Painted Blood" and "Repentless" (except for the instrumental at the beginning) were omitted. "God Hates Us All" also used 'Bloodline', which is undoubtedly good, but clearly draws the short straw compared to 'Disciple', 'Exile', 'War Zone' and 'Payback'. As already said, only the quasi-title track of the album "Reign In Blood" was considered, while the whole album would have deserved a tribute. Well, the choice of title was probably not the strength of the people who organized the album.

Musically, all the SLAYER hits are then well presented. The production is understandably not quite as high-quality as the original, but it sounds quite coherent. A few times real death growls are used, which is his very suitable means in the musical basis. Probably the biggest difference is 'Delusions Of Saviour' from the original, which sounds much larger and wider in the tribute version. It creates a different atmosphere, but loses its raison d'être because the track 'Repentless' has not been covered.

In the end, it is really the tracklist that pulls the album down in the overall standings. - POWERMETAL

It’s been fun and challenging to both learn the songs I did, but also put my own twist onto the songs [while] keeping it true to the original source material. As a business owner, this is my first major album drop. I’m learning a lot about the music industry, as well as the recording industry. I’m really excited to see where this album takes me!”
