Sepultura is a thrash/groove metal band that was founded in 1984 in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. The brothers Max (vocals/guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums) formed the core of the band. Slayer was one of the thrash metal bands that influenced them. The first three albums were released by a Brazilian record label. The name Sepultura literally means: grave monument in Portuguese. It was not until the release of their fourth album, called Arise, that the band received international recognition. The band gained cult status in the underground metal scene and grew into one of the most popular bands in the metal genre in the early 90s. With each album, the band's following grew enormously. The commercial peak was reached after the release of the sixth album Roots. After this, singer/founder Max decided to leave the band because the other three band members fired Max's wife Gloria as manager. He then started his own band: Soulfly. Sepultura continued with singer Derrick Green from 1998, which allowed them to keep their loyal fans. In 2006, drummer Igor Cavalera left the band, after he stayed home during the European tour of Dante XXI. He had just become a father at the time and Roy Mayorga (ex-Soulfly) was asked to be the temporary drummer. Jean Dolabella succeeded him as drummer. Sepultura released the successor to Dante XXI in the spring of 2009: A-Lex. Like its predecessor, this record is also a concept album. The album is based on the book A Clockwork Orange
In 2010, an agreement was signed with the record label Nuclear Blast. Through this label, the album "KAIROS" was released in 2011. In the fall of 2011, Jean decided to leave the group and was replaced by Eloy Cassagrande. Between 1984 and 1989, Sepultura mainly played death metal. The debut album, Morbid Visions, was released in 1986. The single Troops of Doom received radio attention, which gave the young Sepultura a wider reach. The band followed in 1987 with the album Schizophrenia, which continued the trend of death metal. Critics especially pointed out the strong sound and the solos of the band's new guitarist, Andreas Kisser. The line-up of Andreas Kisser (guitar), Max Cavalera (guitar/vocals), Igor Cavalera (drums) and Paulo Xisto Pinto (bass) is considered by many fans to be the classic line-up of Sepultura. This line-up would continue until 1996. In 1989, the band released the album Beneath The Remains. The album was more thrash metal than death metal, and was a huge success. The success of Beneath The Remains was surpassed in 1991 with the album Arise, and then again with the album Chaos AD in 1993. Hundreds of thousands of records were sold worldwide. The band played to increasingly larger audiences and gained international recognition. The band's style moved more and more towards classic thrash metal, like bands like Metallica and Slayer. In 1996, the band released the album Roots.
