Dark Side of the Moon is one of those albums I know so, so well: put the thing on and it’s kind of like visiting with an old friend, you just fall right back into it. Which is why Doom Side of the Moon — The Sword guitarist Kyle Schutt’s doom reimagining of the Pink Floyd classic — is so much fun to listen to: it’s very familiar, but it’s also challenging and different!
After hearing the album’s rendition of “Money” and “Time” over the past couple of months, now we get to hear the whole shebang. And it’s as trippy, weird, and fitting as one might hope given the concept. Rarely does the group — which also includes Bryan Richie (bass) and Santiago Vela III (drums) alongside vocalist Alex Marrero (Brownout/Brown Sabbath), saxophonist Jason Grey (Black Joe Lewis) and keyboardist Joe Cornetti (Croy & The Boys) — play it too close to the chest; the arrangements vary from slightly interpretive to really fucking interpretive, yet never venture so far out that the tunes are unrecognizable. It’s exactly what I wanted from this record.
Check it out in full below! Doom Side of the Moon comes out on August 4th and can be pre-ordered here . Those in the Austin area can see the band perform the album live on August 5th at Emo’s. Via MetalSucks
