5 Best Weed Metal Anthems In 2020
The legalization of marijuana is a slow progression of wins for stoners. The first state to legalize cannabis recreationally is California on January 1, 2018. That win for weed lovers comes after a century-long debate over legalization. California set a precedence for the rest of the states.
Since then, there are now 11 states and the District of Columbia that have recreational marijuana legal. They are the following:
For these states, gone are the days when stoners need to have a medical condition and a license to smoke weed. After all, most people just want to get high. Recreational marijuana legalization gives people the freedom to enjoy and benefit from this natural herb.
Medical marijuana is also part of the weed legalization story. Again, California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana back in 1996. Since then, there are 33 states and the District of Columbia that leaped into medical marijuana legalization.
Legalization isn’t the only thing that makes weed accepted. Back in the 20th century, when jazz music was at the forefront of the music scene, jazz musicians like the iconic Louis Armstrong used marijuana to get high and the timing of the music. Weed made music timing slower, thus giving the musicians time for those melodic interludes in between notes. From that point on, weed was used as a way to both make and listen to music. The herb makes music sound better. Every beat, every melody is heard when you’re high. This is what musicians of weed tunes hope to accomplish -- for their music and love of weed to be genuinely appreciated.
With legalization comes a wider acceptance of weed. Once shunned, people are now accepting it either as a medicine or as something that can be enjoyed freely and openly. One particular group of stoners, the metal head stoners, use just cannabis and music to express themselves. Known as stoner rock, these are the metal songs that mention marijuana or are entirely about it. Of course, stoners have their faves. Here are the top five. Rock on!
Topping off the list is Black Sabbath’s, Sweet Leaf. A love song about weed, Sweet Leaf pounds into your mind a tribute of honor and love. The last lyrics, “And soon the world will love you sweet leaf,” seemingly reassures the plant that it’ll be accepted, a prediction of some sort. Cranking out blasts of sound, the band plays while Ozzy Ozzborne belts out the words of true love. Sweet Leaf is a classic that should never be forgotten as the father of the stoner rock genre.
From the opening electronic, cosmic beeps and bops to the demonic scream, “Whenever it feels right,” Spacegrass, in its entirety, offers a blend of electrifying sounds and metallic melodies. The lyric, “Whenever it feels right,” refers to the freedom of smoking weed at any time they feel like it. The rest of the song takes you on a trip through the universe with vibrant imagery as the background visual to hardcore metal. This is a trip worth taking.
Nashville Pussy doesn’t hide anything when they roar at the beginning of the song, “I’m so high,” making it well known that weed is wonderful. The screeching guitars and the vocalist’s deep call to the herb leave you feeling like you want to be right there with them. Although not well known, Nashville Pussy was nominated for Best Metal Performance in 1999. They lost to Metallica.
Metalhead stoners made Bury Me in Smoke the metal funeral anthem, as the song is about enjoying weed until the day you die. A seven-minute-long song, Bury Me in Smoke, is a tribute to marijuana and honor of death. It is a dark song, but it does shed some light on the idea of living life to the fullest by doing what you love. That is smoke weed.
Lighting up at the beginning of Nod Scene, Monster Magnet doesn’t hold back, making it known their singing about weed. With the click of a lighter, it immediately becomes clear that weed is on their minds. Nod Scene is a slow song with a stoner rock ballad that bellows melodic metal to rough yet eloquently spoken lyrics.
Weed and music go hand in hand. Alone, they can be appreciated. Together, they’re loved. One interacts with the other, giving you an experience you’ll never forget. Stoner metal rock gives you an experience of hardcore sounds being manipulated by weed’s effect, giving you an almost concert-like feeling. There’s no better night in like a night of weed and metal songs.
