LIVING METAL – 2018 “Living Metal” label : private songs : Are You Ready For Metal? / Living For Metal / Fire On Two Wheels / Back To The 80's / Hail! The True Metal (Will Never Die) / Rocka Rolla (Judas Priest cover) // web : https://www.facebook.com/LivingMetalOfficial/ Debut outing by this Brazilian unit that has True Metal written all over. Its cover image and song titles speak for itself, and the music does the rest. Living Metal truly live up to their moniker, addressing to easy going, straight forward Metal tracks with a catchy vibe and gripping themes. The galloping “Living For Metal” is all that, and the up-tempo “Fire On Two Wheels” does exactly the same but in a more traditional, riff-based HardRock / Metal styled fashion, gelling the likes of Accept and Judas Priest. More Judas Priest minded Metal comes in the shape of the mid-paced HardRock / Metaler “Back To The 80's”, and the cover version of “Rocka Rolla”. Although there's the occasional hint of Halford in the vocal department, the singer has a tone and roar that is functional and all Metal without tending to sound like Priest. The band returns to gallop-modus with the mid-tempo, Epic-Metal fist pumper “Hail” The True Metal” that picks up speed after the solo. The strength of this E.P is its no-frills, bare bones approach that makes for an entertaining listening affair. Enjoyable.

Manic Mosh Metal interview with Living Metal singer Pedro Zupo
Manic Mosh Metal: Did the band release any demo-tapes prior to the album, or is this the very first material to be materialized? Pedro Zupo : Hello Metal brother! First of all, I must say that it is an honour for us to answer these questions! In our country (Brazil), it really is too expensive to release any kind of material. As we figured, we would spend money to do our first material, we decided to go straight for an E.P without demos, so we would spend just once, but with good quality material. MMM: What are the bands the concept of Living Metal has sourced from; there's traces of classic HardRock / Metal acts such as Accept and Priest, as showcased on “Back To The 80's”... Pedro : Judas Priest is our biggest influence! Accept is a big influence too, as we would like to rescue the 80’s metal sonority... almost all of our influences are these titans of the 80’s heavy sound…Manowar, Manilla Road, Demon, Saxon and some others MMM: ”Hail! The True Metal” shows a different approach, addressing to a more Epic Metal minded sound; will there be more of this in the future? Pedro : We want to capture the majestic atmosphere of the Metal songs that bands like Priest and Manowar do! Hopefully we will have a lot of this approach in the future MMM: You guys have kept the technicality to a minimum, and opted for a rather straight forward sound; do you think that gives the album this 80's charm Pedro : For sure! Metal is for mad head banging not for showing how good we are as musicians! We put our concept of 80’s Metal before anything, so I think that helps us to reach that result. MMM: Anything else you'd like to add.. Pedro: Not only are we a Metal band, we are Metal lovers and Metal believers! HEIR APPARENT – 2018 “The View From Below” label : No Remorse records songs: Man In the Sky / The Door / Here We Aren't / Synthetic Lies / Savior / Further And Farther / The Road To Palestine/ Insomnia // web: https://www.facebook.com/HeirApparentOfficial U.S outfit Heir Apparent need no further introduction, launching a monumental album, “Graceful Inheritance” in 1986, that put them up there with the best in (Progressive) U.S Metal territories. With only but one follow-up, “One Small Voice” ('89) to continue the legacy, it was not until 2018 that the band revived their brilliance with “The View From Below”, although being different in approach and sound. The album is mainly 90's U.S. Power / Progressive oriented with a focus on atmosphere rather than technicality. The Progressive element is funnelled through the dramatic, emotive-laden moments on the disc that peak on the semi-balladry of “Further And Farther” that sits alongside the beautiful piano – vocal rooted piece that is “Here We Aren't”. It is also here that the vocal excellence of new singer Will Shaw shows in full, delivering lots of feel with an rough edge and a solid vibrato. A thing that is repeated on the slow and sludgy grinder “Synthetic Lies” that cranks up the vocal muscle over a Queensryche tinged atmosphere. Most of the set moves in a slow to moderate tempo - that also gives room for some Stoner esque grooves down “The Door” - with the catchy, upbeat PowerMetaler “Savior” as the fastest, and the most traditional rooted pick of the bunch. This album ticks all the boxes in both songwriting and delivery, and makes for a gripping listening experience that perfectly couples power to atmosphere with the vocals in the centre of attention. CANCER – 2018 “Shadow Gripped” label : Peaceville records songs : Down The Steps / Garrotte / Ballcutter / Organ Snatcher / The Infocidal / Half Man Half Beast / Crimes So Vile / Thou Shalt Kill / Shadow Gripped / Dispose // web : https://www.facebook.com/goryend/ U.K based three-piece Cancer are one of the monumental acts that were right there at the evolution of the 90's DeathMetal thing, entering the scene with the “To The Gory End” album. Although the band never equalled the quality and impact of their debut over the course of time and a few 'come back' releases, the band rips it up in true 90's DeathMetal fashion with “Shadow Gripped”; a collection of straight-forward, cold sphered DeathMetal tracks that are given substance by a wall of meaty crunch guitars, sticky themes and deep, gurgling grunts. The whole deal reminds of the classic Tampa style DeathMetal, pushed forward on the propelling, double bass-drummed tracks “Organ Snatcher” and “Half Man Half Beast”, and the slow – fast structured “Thou Shalt Kill”. Songs are mostly slow - fast or fast - slow structured, with snare drummed drives to fuel the faster parts of songs such as the lightly Celtic Frost sourced “The Infocidal”, the Possessed tinged “Ball Cutter” and the thundering, Thrash injected “Garrotte”. “Shadow Gripped” is one incredibly energetic DeathMetal affair that grips all the way through and is further elevated by a demolishing production. SATAN – 2018 “Cruel Magic”

This formula worked, and it still does to this very day, although there's no traces of the NWOBHM sound left, apart from the unique vocal tone of NWOBHM deluxe singer Brian Ross, and this one track; “Ghosts Of Monongah”, and the intro plus particles of “Into The Mouth Of Eternity”. Overall, the set on the album hoovers in between a varied array of genres,including PowerMetal, Thrash, 80's & 90's Metal and SpeedMetal. Fastest tunes on offer include the rhythm riffed “The Doomsday Clock”, the monster-riff driven “Who Among Us”, and the U.S Power / Speed styled “My Prophetic Soul” and “Death Knell For A King”. Down the slower end of the spectrum are the chunky, 80's Metaler “Cruel Magic”, the driven and rhythmic, PowerMetal edged “Legions Hellbound” (featuring some great drumage),and the sludgy, atmospheric laden “Ophidian” (that has a certain click with Megadeath halfway down), and the moderately paced, 90's Metal minded “Mortality”. The album stands out in diversity and impact and comes with a slight melodic undertone and a whole lot of guitar and drum hooks. Special note to the drum-sound that is quite prominent in the mix and has this rather unusual but very genuine, close-range like appearance. CRONAXIA – 2018 “Collapsing The Outer Structure” label:Lusitanian Music songs: Collapsing The Outer Structure / Logarithmic Cavitation / The Core Condition / Dimension Ratio / Continuous Signal / Embryonic Reanimation / Plasmatech / Tangential Threshold // web : https://cronaxia.bandcamp.com/ Although Portugal based Deathsters Cronaxia have been around since the late 90's, this happens to be their first full-length outing. The musical experience is evident right from the start of this 8-songer that catapults you straight back to the early – mid 90's Tampa DeathMetal sound, and puts many bands of the genre to shame. This is an explosive performance that rips through each and every track with an overdose of brutality and technicality. Most Progressive appearance has got to be “Logarithmic Cavitation” but technical and mobility wise, “Dimension Ratio” tops it, sporting a frenzy of melody changes in the guitar department, and some really sick drummage by Rolando Barros; a true, technical mastermind musician that fires the whole thing up with an over-the-top palette of drum layers; from snare-drummed hooks and punishing blast beats to rhythmic modes and a whole lot of rattling double bass drums. Add to this some buzzing, DeathThrash like riffs and deep, gurgling grunts and the result is a 'best in class' DeathMetal album with a maximum score in the technical department. Impressive!

NECROPHOBIC – 2018 “Mark Of The Necrogram” label : Century Media records songs : Mark of the Necrogram / Odium Caecum / Tsar Bomba / Lamashtu / Sacrosanct / Pesta / Requiem For A Dying Sun / Crown Of Horns / From The Great Above To The Great Below / Undergången // web : http://www.necrophobic.net/ Old school Deathsters that were right there when Swedish DeathMetal was at its prime. The band's '91 “Unholy Prophecies” demo upped the band in its territories and their newest outing,”Mark Of The Necrogram” does it all over again. On offer is a broad spectrum of songs that hoover in between classic Death and BlackMetal with Metal hooks and added twists in concept. First, there's the melodic, Nordic swing as showcased on the fairly BlackMetal dominated titletrack, and “Crown Of Thorns” that merges the Nordic thing with a blend of Trash. The Viking features pop up in the chorus of “Tsar Bomba”,and run underneath the slow paced “Requiem For A Dying Sun” that tends to a more modern adaptation of DeathMetal. Among the heaviest offerings is the slow-fast “Sacrosanct” that partly rolls on blast beats with a Metal riff thrown in. More blast beat action comes surfacing on the more BlackMetal oriented “Lamashtu”.Dressed with a raspy grunt style, melodic guitar hooks, crunching riffs, and a whole lot of thundering double-bass drum action, Necrophobic testifies to its quality, and further ups it with a good lot of shape shifting without being technical. KING COMPANY – 2018 “Queen Of Hearts” labe l: Frontiers music songs : Queen Of Hearts / One Day Of Your Life / Stars / Living In A Hurricane / Under The Spell / Never Say Goodbye / Learn To Fly / Berlin / King For Tonight / Living The Dream / Arrival / Good Thing (bonus track – digital version // web : https://www.facebook.com/kingcompanyofficial/ http://www.kingcompanyband.com Newest album by this Finland based act, merging 80's melodic HardRock /Metal with 90's U.S Mainstream HardRock. Although the American sound prevails throughout, the Scandinavian roots still show, as evidenced on the melodic semi-Headbanger “Queen Of Hearts”, coupling Europe to Alcatrazz. The beefy, moderately paced HardRocker “Living In A Hurricane” clicks with Dokken, whilst the more cliché styled Mainstream Rocker “Never Say Goodbye” somehow reminds of Firehouse (vocal wise). The vocals displayed here are of an upper mid-range tone but show an ability to adapt to the various musical styles, and overall sound easy on the ear. Music is well played and the whole thing sticks together properly with the synths backing creating this full sound, and even pushing the band towards the Goth thing down the balladry of “Living The Dream”. THEM – 2018 “Manor Of The Se7en Gables” label : Steamhammer / SPV songs : Residuum / Circuitous / Refuge In The Manor / Witchfinder / A Scullery Maid / Ravna / As The Sage Burns / The Secret Stairs / Peine Forte Et Dure / Maleficium / Seven Gables To Ash / Punishment By Fire // web : https://www.facebook.com/thembandofficial/ Newest outlet by this inter-continental act that is quickly making a name in the scene. The album basically is a mix of melodic 80's Euro-Powermetal and 90's U.S PowerMetal / Thrash that is dressed with atmospheric / Gothic synths backing. This all comes together in the semi-orchestral like “Maleficium” which also highlights the technical element down the material. Them has often been compared to MF Fate, but stripped from the King Diamond esque image, falsetto highs, and some multi sung / dubbed lead lines, Them have more in common with Megadeath instead. This is clearly witnessed on the mid-paced PowerMetaler “Witchfinder”, and fragments of the double-bass drummed semi-Thrasher “Seven Gables To Ash”. Furthering on the Thrash thing is the galloping, Forbidden / Testament tinged “Refuge In The Manor”, whilst “Punishment By Fire” covers the whole palette of musical styles, coupling melodic PowerMetal and Thrash with Gothic choirs and Nordic style BlackMetal riffs. There's a lot of double-bass drummage throughout the set that is largely riff dominated. The whole thing is energetic with a good, allround delivery and a fat, pounding production. For a retro styled / inspired band, Them sounds rather modern and a bit too 'polished' in places, tending towards a more 'overground' / commercial appearance. PIG – 2018 “Risen” label: Metropolis records songs : The Chosen Few / Morphine Machine / Loud, Lawless & Lost / The Revelation (Misinterpretation Mix) / Truth Is Sin / The Vice Girls / Rise & Repent (Descent Mix) / Leather Pig / When I’m Done (Delivered Mix) / The Cult Of Chaos / The Hangman’s Wooing / Prey & Obey (Disobey Mix) / Hard Machine (Lard Machine Mix) / Ecstasy & Exorcism (Excoriation Variation Mix) // web : https://pigindustries.bandcamp.com The “Risen” album by Industrial (Goth) Rock legends Pig pretty much sounds like a retrospect of the band's repertoire through the years. The collaborations with artists from bands such as The Sisters Of Mercy, Combichrist, KMFDM and Filter in combination with various mix-versions add up to this and give the album a varied palette of electronic entertainment. Pig goes back to the early days of the electronic genre in the shape of the 80's, Funk Pop-injected “Loud, Lawless & Lost” that sounds something like Gary Numan – meets – Bowie's “Fashion” in an Industrial manner. At the other end of the spectrum sits the Industrial riff monster that is “The revelation”; the heaviest outing on the album, along with the bobbing slow grinder “Morphine Machine”. In between this is a variety of sounds and styles, including machinery like Industrial Rock (“Rise & Repent”), melancholic balladry (“Truth Is Sin”, “When I'm Done”), Dark sphered Mainstream Rock (“The Hangman's Wooing”), Wave Rock (“The Cult Of Chaos”), and allround depressing melancholy Nick Cave style down “Ecstasy & Exorcism”). The overall delivery of the material is high level and experienced, and beefed up by a superb, power-punch production. Add to all this, the vocal poetry of frontman Raymond Watts, materialized in a deep, level tone voice, and you have a collection of songs that ticks all the boxes. Complete. Paul van der Burght

INTERVIEW WITH WITCHTOWER ORIGINATOR VICTOR M. DE LA CHICA

Manic Mosh Metal: How and when did WITCHTOWER come into existence, and were you involved in other bands prior to Witchtower. Victor: Witchtower started in 2013, when I uploaded the first E.P as a YouTube video; it was very exciting for me because it got a lot of good reviews from a vast amount of people into Underdround Metal way. At that time, I was also involved in other bands like Sombras Del Destino (melodic Speed Metal) and Aria Inferno (Progressive Metal) as a bassist sharing the band with Ronnie Romero from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow) MMM: When did you decide to make Witchtower a full-band, or were musicians just called in to help record the selftitled debut? Victor : At the time, I was into an IRON MAIDEN cover band called Opera Prima; I talked with the guys and they really liked the idea. Next thing, Witchtower started as a band! MMM: The real breakthrough came with the “Hammer of Witches” album. What do you think triggered this? Victor : I think that “Hammer Of Witches” worked for its simple contribution and say, a humble vision of Old School Heavy Metal with a spoonful of mysticism and occult Rock. Nowadays all copies of the album in all possible versions are almost sold out. So I think that we did the fine! MMM: The sound of Witchtower is firmly rooted in the classic HardRock / Metal thing and even touches upon the Blues-infused HardRock sound of the early 80's as showcased on “Fast Broomsticks”. Victor : Yes, you are right; in my opinion, this is a good song; you can hear a big influence of bands like UFO or Randy. Talking about the lyrics, it is a mixed history about the power of witches and drugs. MMM: Any bands in particular that have inspired you concept wise? Victor : Early Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Deep Purple Thin Lizzy, UFO, Angel Witch, Diamond Head... etc. MMM: Since Witchtower has a broad spectrum of styles that have been given an own swing, is there any that you would further on specifically or will you maintain this diversity? Victor : You will find the answer for this on the next album! MMM: Witchtower is also being featured alongside Backslash on the “Tribute To Randy” mini-LP; how did that came about? Victor : They offered us to take part on this and we accepted with excitement. Iron Shield records and Blackslash offered us a good deal too. MMM: Since this split was released through Iron Shield records; will this also be the label of choice for a future release? Victor : Honestly no. Maybe a re-issue on vinyl would be great, but we think firmly that it needs a remaster. Songs from Blackslash are louder than Witchtower. MMM: So, any news on the new album,and what can we expect for the future? Victor : I want to make our third album our best album ever; I know it will be a hard task, because there are a lot of bands out there with good albums and tracks. But, I am working on 8 songs, the best 8 killer tracks ever from Witchtower. It is my personal quest to keep the Old Metal alive, and to fight against modern Metal, reggaeton and the rest of inferior styles! MMM: Anything else you'd like to add? ASHBURY - 2018 "Eye Of The Stygian Witches" l abel : High Roller Records (CD & LP format) songs : End Of All Time / Good Guitar / Summer Fades Away / Celtic Cross / Waited So Long / Out Of The Blue / Faceless Waters / Searchin' / Amber Glass / Eye Of The Stygian Witches / All My Memories // web : https://www.facebook.com/Ashbury-USA-376482897840 The '83 Ashbury album “Endless Skies” is a much praised and sought after collectible with a matching, three figure price tag. With the back catalogue being re-released in more recent years, the band elevated itself out of the obscurity corner and followed it up with a brand new release. One stuck to the 70's Progressive Rock concept of their previous works, but sees an increase of the Folk thing and mellowed down acoustics, the latter which are an essential feature throughout. This comes with a good lot of sing along themes, or in the shape of vocal + guitar only modes, as on “Summer Fades Away”. There's the occasional click with Wishbone Ash in the guitar / instrumental department (and guitar sound) as witnessed on the Hippie styled Prog Rocker “End Of Al Time” and the Folk infused instrumental “Celtic Cross” that additionally incorporates flute. Epic features pop up at the beginning of “Waited So Long” before it morphs into a ballad. The whole appearance on the album is rather mild and at the other end of the stick of anything HardRock minded, apart from the riff-based Rocker “Goof Guitar” and the Bluesed up “Faceless Waters”. Overall, material is preferably slow to mid-paced with little variety in drive and drums. That is a different matter when it comes to the guitar which lifts the songs with with groovy, and ad-lib style solo actions but does not excel. Fair Paul van der Burght

FAST EVIL – 2018 “The Midnight Force” label: Classic Metal records songs: The Arrival / Hellboss / Japanese Killer / Hell Angel / The Midnight Force / Evil Maniacs / Living At The Speed / Metal Is Back / Ritual Of Sacrifice // web : https://www.facebook.com/FastevilBand This first full-lengther by Brazilian Speedsters Fast Evil features all of the songs from the “Wake Up The Devil” E.P. Plus 4 new tracks and an intro; “The Arrival”. The concept on display here basically sounds like accelerated Metal, sort of like the thing very early SpeedMetal bands did, particularly those evolving from the NWOBHM (as on the Savage esque “Japanese Killer”), and the first generation U.S bands such as Abattoir (“Hell Angel”), the latter which is pushed forward on the rhythm riffed “Hell Angel” that incorporates additional traces of Iron Angel and Living Death; two sources that return in full force on the more Euro-styled SpeedMetaler “Evil Maniacs”. The driven “The Midnight Force” alternates Metal with speed in the styles of Exciter and counts as the most in-depth offering here with some cool guitar actions as another plus. A similar twist of speed and subtlety is present on “Living At The Speed” with the Euro sound high up there. The Malibu Barbi styled, rhythm riffed speedster “Metal Is Back” stands out in both tempo (as it is the fastest cut) and vocalage, featuring quite a distinctive up-tone voice. The album concludes with the Griffin – meets – Priest styled up-tempo Metaler “Ritual Of Sacrifice”, complimenting the allround diversity of the set. Nice. Paul van der Burght

This is pushed forward on the Gothic edged “If It Bleeds We Can Kill It”. More tending towards the melodic (Power)Metal thing Helloween style are “Grey Wardens” and “Angels On Neon Wings”. There is a good allround variety in songs here, furthered with the anthemic balladry of “Fallen Star”, and the theatrical, Meatloaf esque Stadium Rocker “Days Of High Adventure” (that goes back to the late 70's, American style with lots of piano), the 80's, American Mainstream Rocker “Evermore”, the slow, semi-pounder “The Iron Price” with its fist in the air chorus, and the traditional, melodic PowerMetal minded “Eternia Eternal” with its Helloween esque undertones. Dragony have a decent and for the genre functional singer without the (falsetto) upper tones; it works well but does not spark. Same goes for the performance as w hole which sports all the trimmings, including plenty of double bass drummage, chants, and 'orchestral' synths usage, which are all over the 'bombastic' “Defenders”. The synthesizer is a pretty dominant thing throughout the disc, and stimulates the vibe of certain songs; equally it is a bit out of place or overdone, as witnessed on “The Touch”; an American style PompRocker in the 80's tradition with a strong Journey taste. Dragony ticks all the boxes and has come up with a proper album, but does not exceed, OK

STRANA OFFICINA – 2018 “Non Finira Mai” label : Jolly Roger records songs : Non Finira Mai / Bimbo / Ricordo Di Lei / Vittima / Non Finira Mai ('95) / Bimbo ('95) / Amore E Fuoco ('95) / Vittima ('95) // web : https://www.facebook.com/StranaOfficinaBand/ Italy's Strana Officina first entered the scene in '83 with a contribution to the “Heavy Metal Eruption” compilation LP with the song “Non Sei Normale”, and from then onwards the band ranked themselves as one of the heavier and better bands to emerge from the Italian Metal scene without getting the credit they really deserved. Their newest work, “Non Finire Mai” is sung in native tongue and played in the 80's HardRock / Metal tradition, beefed up with a power-punch production and meaty guitars. This makes for a chunky sound, coupled to the moderate tempos of the classic rooted titletrack and the 90's Alternative edged “Bimbo” that also features its original, lighter format '95 version. Another element that lifts the power of the music are the muscle vocals of Daniele “Bud”Ancillotti, whilst the quality upgrade comes off the hands of guitarist Dario Cappanera, saucing the songs with some cool, grooved up guitar action. Fastest pick of the set is the thundering, Priest – meets – Picture Euro Headbanger “ Ricordo Di Lei”, whilst the NWOBHM styled and Boogie based “Amore E Fuoco” harks back to the very early 80's, and the Scorpions / T.T.Quick esque “Vittima” colours the musical palette with some classic Rock balladry.
