JB Matson Joins The Zach Moonshine Show – The Final Maryland Doom Fest is Upon Us!
🎙️ Originally aired: Friday, May 30th, 2025
On a powerful and emotional edition of The Zach Moonshine Show , JB Matson — founder of The Maryland Doom Fest and drummer for Bloodshot — sat down for a raw and unfiltered interview, marking the end of an era for the underground doom and stoner metal community.
After over a decade of championing the heaviest sounds in the underground, Maryland Doom Fest is preparing to take its final bow with the 11th and last edition of the festival in 2025 . JB reflects on the festival's roots, its cultural impact, and what lies ahead for the scene and himself.
From humble beginnings, the fest was born out of a desire to revive a fading Maryland doom scene , and it did just that — elevating over 500 bands across the years and helping reestablish the region as a hub for heavy music. “ Mission accomplished ,” JB says with conviction during the show. The festival didn’t just book bands; it built community , forged bonds, and gave a stage to underground acts that larger festivals overlooked.
Throughout the interview, JB shares deeply personal stories and reflections — from the joys of nurturing new talent to the financial hardships and challenges that came with running an independent fest, including the heavy toll of the pandemic. He also pays tribute to several influential figures in the scene who are no longer with us, adding an emotional weight to this final chapter.
Despite everything, JB’s passion for the music and the community never wavered. He made it clear that Doom Fest wasn’t about profit — it was about people, passion, and preservation . “I wanted to help bands the way I wish other fests helped me,” he says, highlighting a mission grounded in sincerity and integrity.
The final lineup is massive, boasting The Skull, Apostle of Solitude, Psychotic Reaction, Spiral Grave, Red Beard Wall, Crystal Spiders, Witchpit, Hollow Leg, Sons of Arrakis, Stygian Crown , and many more. It’s a farewell worthy of the legacy Maryland Doom Fest leaves behind — a thunderous celebration of everything it stood for .
