Death Rattle, a melodic groove metal outfit that hails from New England, faced many trials during their touring cycle following the release of their sophomore release, Volition, in 2017. Their unique blend of memorable riffs and an uncompromising live show made them appointment viewing for the metal crowds in the Northeast. Founding members Chris Morin (drums) and Ryan Vanderwolk (Guitar) were on the road, alongside vocalist Trey Holton, for three years. During this time, they would weather the departure of multiple members of the band, but the three remained dedicated to their shared vision for the music. In February of 2020, however, the Death Rattle would reach a breaking point.
In part one of their biopic series, we saw an overview of the Death Rattle tale. In part two, the band allows us to see the tensions leading up to their tour through East-Asia in the early days of the pandemic all the way through their breaking point when they returned home. Each member takes us inside their thought process as the bonds of brotherhood they formed on the road and in the studio were frayed. It is truly a unique look into how the weight of a generational global tragedy that stopped the world for a two-year span affected the artists in the metal industry. Although the Death Rattle story is only a microcosm of the total COVID effect, most metal fans and musicians can probably see a little bit of themselves in their individual and collective struggle.
The video below shows us the challenges they faced that lead to their long hiatus, but in part three, we can look forward to seeing the band’s reformation and resurgence. Death Rattle plowed through their difficulties to emerge on the other side with ten new songs and a hunger to take the stage once again. Stay tuned for part three that will drop in the next few weeks. For now, watch part two below:
