This period marked the return to the scene, after so many years of absence, of some realities that populated the Italian underground in the early years of the new millennium and that, even if only for seniority, we could define “historical”. After the Death Dies with Stregoneria"witchcraft" it is in fact the turn of Gosforth, a band formed by members of Black Oath and The Rite, whose silence lasted since 2006. After the publication of the long-distance debut “V.H.E.M.T.” in 2004 and the subsequent Hornlust“Hrhornlust” in 2006, which had aroused a fair impression among audiences and industry critics, the band had completely lost track, so this new “Scourge Of Dark Dominion”, which comes out under the aegis of the Underground Kvlt Records, could almost be considered as a kind of new debut. In fact, for the Gosforth, as they say, time seems to have stopped because this new work highlights a clear continuity, not only stylistic but also executive, compared to its two predecessors, net of greater fluidity and maturity in the construction of the pieces, probably the result of the experience accumulated in this long period by the musicians involved in the project: to put it in other terms, our friends prove to be refractory to any “blackman” speech.that they know and that they want to play.
Their references therefore remain the classic ones, which can not be more classic, with an eye to the Mayhem, whose ghost seems to hover like a dark and threatening shadow on the compositions of this album, without however turning it into a pure and simple tribute to what was the band of Euronymous. Proof of them are pieces like the opener “Luciferian Gnosis” and, perhaps even more markedly, “As Gods Below”, in my opinion the real spearhead of the album and certainly the song that struck me most from the first listening: songs built on a good alternation between outbursts in blast beats and more cadenced and dark moments, as could be a “Freezing Moon”, which bring us back to the ninety. As a result of all prejudice, he won the metallic audience. Even the sucked and longed-for singing of A.th seems to recall a little that of Attila Csihar while the dusty and suffocated production, not too powerful, extols the sulphurous aurea of which this work is impregnated from the first to the last note.
The group seems to be at ease even in the most slowed passages, sometimes embellished with simple but functional synth lines with an almost liturgical flavor, as happens for example in “Graced By Flames”, a true deadly litany, in my opinion not by chance placed at the very half of the album, almost to represent the culmination of the tension, or partly also in the final “Legion Of The Adversary”, which recovers that ritual atmosphere and closes the disco. Ultimately we can say that “Scourge Of Dark Dominion” is a return that is played rather well its cards, consciously inserting itself into a well-defined traditional furrow, of which it intends to respect (and in fact respects) all the canons. A record for nostalgic then? Perhaps yes but also a confirmation for long-time supporters and a good opportunity to approach the Italian group by those who had never heard them before. blackmetalistkrieg
