When I saw the definition "for fans of Atheist, Cynic, Death" I immediately jumped on these Cosmic Jaguars, since they were compared to three of my favorite "extreme" bands; in fact, however, in addition to the cover of the always wonderful "Veil of Maya", placed at the end of this EP entitled "The Order of the Jaguar Knights", the sound of this Ukrainian group can be comparable to that of the three aforementioned sacred monsters, but up to a certain point. The pace of the opener "The shorn ones" could recall Death from the 90s (the more prog death ones, so to speak), but the voice of Sergio Lunático (born Sergiy Bondar) is not even distantly related to that of the 'unforgettable Chuck Schuldiner. “The bleeding tree of Tamoanchan” seems like a cross between the Atheist of “Elements” and the Cynic of “Focus”, but the Ukrainian group makes too much noise and would need a strong grind to make its way into the heart of a fan of the two bands Americans. The final "Obsidian mirror" also has excellent instrumental parts, but the problem of the singer returns who seems a little too "over the top" and tends to exaggerate with the screaming; let's say that if Bondar limited himself to bass (which sounds great!) it would certainly be better. The drum work of the excellent Alejo Bárbaro (aka Alexey Tiutiunyk), however, slavishly follows the lesson taught by Richard Christy and Steve Flynn (10 minutes of shame for those who don't know these masters of the drums!) and constitutes, together with the bass, the backbone of the group's sound. The guitar solos are instead left to a session player (Dionisio Oscuto) who however shows an enviable technique. Finally, the performance of the aforementioned Cynic cover is not bad. Cosmic Jaguar's project is extremely ambitious, fitting into that niche of Progressive/Technical Thrash Metal in which only very few manage to enter with full knowledge of the facts; instrumental technique certainly isn't lacking in any of them, you just need to try not to overdo it and maybe find a singer more suited to the specific musical sector. At the moment, this “The Order of the Jaguar Knights” is certainly an interesting product, let's wait for the Ukrainians Cosmic Jaguar on their next album, given that there is ample room for improvement.
