RICH KID EXPRE$$ is a solo rock project from Rob Richardson (Squib Kick Records), a big fan of seventies glam/bubblegum and eighties style hard rock. In the 1990s and 2000s, Rob played in various bands, released two CDs with Heavens Sake and eventually founded his own small independent rock record label. He is also a musical all-rounder who composes and records all the songs himself and plays all the instruments himself. At the beginning of 2020, Rob released his first EP (“Bubblegum Radio”) with his RICH KID EXPRE$$ project, which was followed eight months later by the first long player “Psychodelic”. Work on “Under The Purple Lights” began in early 2022, but a series of setbacks, both medical and musical,
It starts with “U Never”, a straightforward, energetic rocker with a subtle synth touch, which, however, doesn't carry much weight. Musically speaking, Priest's “Turbo” album was a significant influence here, while vocally the song falls more between Alice Cooper and Lordi. The casual “Hard Time Lady”, on the other hand, could be a “forgotten” Kiss / Ace Frehley track from the 70s, in which only the occasional, distorted synth sequences are actually disturbing.
“Mr.Spiffster” also has the influences described above, but the chorus is much cheesier - in the direction of The Sweet - but that doesn't hurt the number in any way. “That's The Way” also has definite 70s vibes. While the verses can still be clearly placed in glam rock, the chorus again has more Kiss-like structures, especially the riff there. “The Dotted Line” is another straight, laid back rock song about a rock star whose fame has faded. As before, this number has easily accessible harmonies that inevitably get your head and feet tapping along.
Let's not kid ourselves that the hard rock wheel isn't being reinvented here, but that wasn't to be expected either. “Under The Purple Lights” is more of a homage to its creator's favorite musical era, which is fun on the one hand, but certainly still has room for improvement when it comes to hooks.
