There are those bands which you hear and immediately go: “ah, yes! This band is from Sweden/England/Germany/USA”, insert country as required. They just have that ‘tone’ and one band which this does not apply to are Last Retch as the Canadians release their debut album ‘Sadism and Severed Heads’.

‘Sadism and Severed Heads’ is an album that this listener hears and immediately the listener knows this band is from Sweden. That guitar says it all. Wrong. Last Retch are very much from Canada, and they’ve been eating nothing but old-school Swedish death metal. From its chainsaw guitar start, the rhythm section kicks in with a percussive element straight out of 1990 and there is nothing wrong with that. Through tracks such as ‘Neurosis’, ‘Ordained in a Dismal Cesspool’ and ‘Cannibals of Tuma’, ‘Sadism and Severed Heads’, Last Retch show that they’ve got all the enjoyability of Entombed and Grave, but also Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and Bolt Thrower.

Last Retch have delivered a debut album which does its best to hark back to a different era whilst keeping its feet in the modern. Yes, there is nothing new here and it is very much a band paying homage to their heroes. However, if you like old-school death metal, then ‘Sadism and Severed Heads’ is a good shout. Metal Digest

Drawing on influences such as Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse and Entombed, Last Retch plays a stripped-back brand of old school death metal. Simple riffs, short songs, and dual chainsaw guitars define their take on the classic death metal sounds of the 90s.
