“L” and “T” are the initials of Leonardo Trevisan , twenty-seven Florentine guitarist who grew up with a passion for hard rock and heavy metal: listening and re-listening to the great classics (identified by Leonardo with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dio , Megadeth, Manowar, Virgin Steele, Saxon, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, AC/DC, Van Halen, Queen, Aerosmith, Deep Purple and Whitesnake) the desire therefore arises to compose and interpret songs that can somehow fit into this vein , a goal that he achieves in 2017 with the finalization of “ Fate Is At My Side”. Yes, because the record that is only being presented to the public today is actually already six years old, and it would be interesting to know the reasons why, instead of requesting an immediate response from the general public, Trevisan instead preferred to wait so long for make his Elle Tea project known to the world . With this singular delay, which in turn constitutes the most singular element of the presentation of the disc, and if one excludes the possible descent of the author from one of the oldest butcher's shops in the Tuscan capital, the only thing left is to proceed with listening to these seven traces and verify what effects the years of aging have possibly produced on the material on display.
Just over half an hour long, the album opens with a title track with an epic and classic flavor which, intelligently, chooses to focus everything on vocal melodies and guitars, elements that have certainly been able to enjoy the greatest attention. In fact, if the bass and electronic drums provide little more than a simple accompaniment, making the general impact predictable, Leonardo 's singing largely compensates for the shortcomings with a fair amount of personality (“ The Wanderer ”). First of all, his style is pleasant, never too tight (“ An Awaited Sign”), the choruses are made with a good sensitivity and one notices – a circumstance as rare as it is commendable – that the songs were composed precisely starting from the singable parts, and subsequently completed (if not properly finished) with the limited means available.
And it is where these side elements are less necessary, such as for example in the atmospheric " Part Of The Devil ", that one feels that special something that the Elle Tea project can express: in fact, there are some interesting ideas, such as for example the contamination between classic heavy but also some modern rock (for example, I also heard something by Ghost here and there), arrangements that are not at all mechanical (“ Riding In The Dust ” has a cow-rock riffto D:A:D), parts in Italian well blended with the rest in English and the ability to face head-on, like Inter in the Champions League, even considerable lengths – with three out of seven songs reaching around five/ six minutes – which would throw even many complete bands into a creative crisis. And then there is a joyful and not at all pretentious attitude, which is expressed in some more immediate and successful episodes (" Voice Of Time "), which further testifies not only to the creative verve that Trevisan possessed in 2017 but also a perfect awareness of his own means, which led him to pack a product to measure and at ease within his own narrow confines.
At the end of listening to “ Fate Is At My Side ” a series of considerations can be made, a result that is already remarkable in itself: the first is that in just thirty-two minutes Elle Tea put so many different things, spread over durations and plots different, moving with agility from more catchy episodes to others able to indulge in interesting digressions that further broaden the scope and horizons of the project. The second point instead concerns the goodness of the guitar riffs and vocal melodies, grafted onto an ascending spiral and so successful that on more than one occasion one forgets the lack of a real band – and probably a real budget – to support them.
The disc sounds mature and energetic (" Burning Soul "), endowed with a solid personality and one never gets the impression that this is a one man band who wanted to make an album just because soccer was skipped that afternoon. The basic ideas are clear and all, truly all, worthy of being developed: in fact, there is no trace that betrays paucity of means, haste for results or creatively short of breath (even the electronic drums are used with a measure that borders on genius) and it is clear that everything on display here, although already sufficiently effective, could benefit enormously from a production capable of accompanying every detail to the next level. Finally, the third and final note concerns the time factor: the perplexity faced by the (apparently inexplicable) choice of keeping this little fruit of love in the drawer for six long years is combined with curiosity about Leonardo's intentions for the future .
