Norway's Nergard, named after multi-instrumentalist Andreas Nergård, has been active since 2010 but I had never run across or even heard of them until their 2023 live EP, Live in Kalvåa, dropped into my review queue. They've released a host of singles along with a few LPs and EPs in the past, so why not a live release? They play power metal that features not one, not two, but three lead vocalists and, in an interesting twist, the harsh singing is supplied by their female singer Stefani Keogh while Andi Kravljača and Mathias Molund Indergård stick to the clean side of the tracks (Keogh also sings clean quite a bit). It is an arrangement that works quite well, especially on the track "Light and Shadows." The best song on Live in Kalvåa is the brisk "Where One Would Shed a Tear," which has a very catchy chorus though I would add that there are no bad songs. Speaking of "bad," the sound and performances on this release are anything but bad, to the point where apart from some nondescript crowd noise following each cut, you'd never know this was live and not a product of the studio, so either it isn't actually live, or this band is incredibly tight. At the end of the day, that doesn't really matter as this is an entertaining release with songs that sound great and have just enough individuality to give it some separation from the crowd. Check it out if you dig bands like Visions of Atlantis, Amberian Dawn, etc. metalcrypt

Short Bio: Nergard was formed way back in 2010 by band leader Andreas Nergård as a project relying on guest artists. Through ten years that spawned two full albums and two EP’s Andreas got to work with some of the biggest names in the genre such as Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) Ralf Scheepers (Gamma Ray, Primal Fear) and many more. In 2020 Andreas wanted a change and seeked to form a steady line-up for the bands third and critically acclaimed album “Eternal White”. Fronted by a unique singer trio the bands epic Symphonic Metal made them enter the charts in Germany as well as gaining a record contract in Japan. The bands new live EP showcases the new line-up in all it’s glory, uniting old and new material.
