I had met Nergard, a project by the Norwegian musician Andreas Nergård, on the occasion of their third album "Eternal white", an album that was not epochal, but still well done; I find them now with even a live album, entitled "Live in Kalvåa", even if rather than defining it as an "album", it would be right to call it an "EP", since it is composed of only six pieces for about half an hour in duration. Having only three full-lengths behind him, for the lineup of this live two songs are extracted equally for each album; therefore, from the first album "Memorial for a wish" we find the opener "Hell on Earth" and "Angels"; from the second "A bit closer to heaven" there are "Light and shadows" and "On through the storm"; from the last studio album, the aforementioned "Eternal white", there are instead the sparkling "Where no one would shed a tear" and the final Nightwishian "From the cradle to the grave". I don't know the first two albums by Nergard, but regarding the third I can say that the choice of these two songs was not wrong. Even in the old compositions, as in the more recent ones, the inspiration is strongly felt by people of the caliber of Nightwish and Kamelot or, in general, by the symphonic Power of the Scandinavian school. The presence of three voices, well defined and different from each other, enriches the musical proposal, above all when they sing together on different registers and in this particularity they terribly recall our Temperance, a group in which the balance and amalgam between the three voices is I dare say fundamental. The charming Stefani Keogh is the one who gives the most malice, resulting in some passages almost malignant; the two male voices, that of the Bosnian Andi Kravljača (ex-Thaurorod, among many) and the Norwegian Mathias Molund Indergård (who vaguely recalls our Gabriele Gozzi of Fallen Sanctuary) complement each other well and do not mind at all! If I have to find fault it is the lack of interaction with the public; I don't know if any cuts were made about it during production, but a live is beautiful precisely because there are parts where the band interacts with their fans and, in this case, they are missed. For those who already know Nergard, this live can be an interesting piece to add to your record collection; for those who, on the other hand, don't know these Norwegians yet, I think this "Live in Kalvåa" is a good opportunity to approach a little-known group that, although not particularly original, plays a Symphonic Power that is pleasant to listen to. allaroundmetal

Short Bio: Nergard was formed way back in 2010 by band leader Andreas Nergård as a project relying on guest artists. Through ten years that spawned two full albums and two EP’s Andreas got to work with some of the biggest names in the genre such as Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) Ralf Scheepers (Gamma Ray, Primal Fear) and many more. In 2020 Andreas wanted a change and seeked to form a steady line-up for the bands third and critically acclaimed album “Eternal White”. Fronted by a unique singer trio the bands epic Symphonic Metal made them enter the charts in Germany as well as gaining a record contract in Japan. The bands new live EP showcases the new line-up in all it’s glory, uniting old and new material.
