Jorik Arts continues to confuse me with his Doom cult. Earlier I reviewed the previous two long players and two split releases from this Dutch doom band. The latest release was a collaboration with Noyde, proudly announcing that this was the first step towards forming a band - Doomcult had been a one-man project until then.

Failure Of Life - it remains a depressing affair of course - is the third album, on which Jorik has once again taken care of the entire set of instruments himself. This time he has largely left the vocal part to a partner in crime. Rens van Herpt (van Teurwilg) provides a welcome extra layer with his raw grunt; his voice fits perfectly here.

Doomcult's doom metal is still inspired by or by the atmospheric doom / death from the 90's, think Peaceville Three, but also has traditional doom metal influences, funeral doom parts and some sludge. The new album contains some of the slowest parts ever recorded by Doomcult, but it also contains some of the most disturbing parts. On the other hand, it offers some of the most up-tempo (well, still rather slow) parts and the most melodic parts.

Indeed, Doomcult - still within 'strict' doom frameworks - has become more versatile. The vocal variety was already a first hint, but the increase in tempo changes, and the sometimes more layered instrumental interpretation are also part of that. And then I can also report that even the production has been considerably polished compared to previous work. Certainly longer tracks like Genesis Undone (a really great song!) and closing track The Final Ride Of Death (with a delightful funeral vibe) benefit from this.

Perhaps a certain pandemic and Jorik's activities with his other band White Mare have given Doomcult a fresh look. Anyway, with Failure Of Life this band has released its best album so far, at least as far as I'm concerned! wingsofdeath

FFO: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Saturnus

Location: The Netherlands

Doomcult is a solo project by J.G. which came alive with the recording of debut album End All Life, which was released by Morbid Syndicate in 2016 and which received many great reviews. In 2018 doomcult returned with the EP Ashes, released by Loneravn Records, followed by the second full length Life Must End released by Narcoleptica Productions. Now, Dutch doom-metal outfit Doomcult returns with their third album titled Life has Failed, released by Kvlt and Kaos. One hour of doom influenced by traditional doom, 90s doom/death (Anathema, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride), funeral, and bits of sludge. As always, Doomcult offers eerie atmospheres, plodding drums and sic melodies, combined with intense screaming. Thematically, Doomcult remain true to their own misanthropic discography, with blasphemous anti-establishment lyrics. For the first two albums Doomcult was hailed for their songwriting, now their songwriting sounds better than ever thanks to a superior production and the guest appearance of Rens van Herpt (Treurwilg) on vocals. The deep growls of Rens are combined with the screams by J.G. to give more diverse vocals.  Doomcult will recruit a life band if there is a good opportunity to promote Life Must End.
