Daniel Costa’s somewhat sporadic project “The Under” return with a shiny new EP for our delectation. “Fathom” is five tracks in not that much past 20mins that explores tropes and genre styles from across the Rock and Metal spectrum. Avoiding the pitfalls of treading too well a beaten path and predictable categorisation by simply letting the songs follow their own directions, “Fathom” is something of a breath of fresh air. One moment there’s Maiden-esque gallops; the next there’s noodle-y Andy Summer guitar stylings as counterpoint to the Metal histrionics; it’s a mix and match that possibly shouldn’t translate into a coherent whole; for the main though, it most certainly does.

There are no absolutes with this EP (and indeed the band themselves). You feel sometimes they are dabbling with a sound or idea rather than fully committing; though when the songs really rip there’s a certain joie de vivre that is quite captivating. “Soul Dive” has a huge potential appeal for the DTP fanbase; just imagine if Devin had worked with Mike Patten, and they’d come up with ideas really late into a heavy session…

…and then closing track “Bless” removes all the impish bedevilment and goes pretty much into mid 90’s Grunge/Alt Rock pseudo-ballad territory with a straight and simple delivery that, on repeated listens, really gets under the skin. It does so in exactly the same way that made you tell your cool friends that you hated songs like that 30ish years ago. More annoyingly, it is a really, really good song of that type, and a total earworm. Metal Digest

Short Bio: THE UNDER is an eclectic metal band - forging a distinctive sound that excites the mind and the ears. Sonic peaks and valleys, contemplative lyrics, and swirling rhythms stretch familiar musical boundaries. Listeners are taken on a journey of exploration, but one that is sure to bring them home in the end.

Boston-based trio The Under emerged in the late 2000’s, the brainchild of singer/guitarist Daniel Costa. 2023 sees the addition of drummer Adam Soucy and the return of bassist Ben Sternbaum. The Fathom EP is the next chapter in The Under’s quest to deliver a unique brand of heaviness.
