With industrial metal company Derision Cult you immediately hear where their greatest inspiration comes from. Opener The Year Hope Failed could easily be on a Ministry record. It's hard, direct and powerful. The screaming and slightly distorted voice takes care of the rest. Even the samples sound familiar. That influence continues to dominate throughout the album. Yet Derision Cult has its own merits with which it scores well. The songs are correct and fit perfectly with the socially critical lyrics. Moreover, there is more variation and – especially considering the last albums of the great example – more drive in the music. Chris Connely (Revolting Cocks and Ministry) and Reeves Gabrel (the Cure and Tin Machine) pull out recognizable punk stops on Deaf Blood. The dragging and menacing Slaves Rebuild also has support from Reeves Gabrel. At that point, Derision Cult proves itself to be more than a Ministry clone. The record ends with two remixes of The Year Hope Failed and Slaves Rebuild . Mercenary Notes Pt 1 continues seamlessly from where the previous album Charlatans Inc. ended up. Driven industrial metal that needs to be played really hard. Just blast. rockportaal
