The Danish trio DREAD WITCH was only created in 2022 and is already making a remarkable entry into the market with their first album, Tower Of The Severed Serpent .
Stepping on the ice in the middle of a blizzard, I approach the Tower and I'm not far from it. Oh that ! The intro of The Tower sets the scene well and when Mikaellets out its first guttural howl my blood freezes. The riff is powerful and mournful. The track stretches over 8'30 of an infernal doom accompanied by a death vocals which blends very well. No doubt, it's a great opening but here I am already off to meet the Serpent God. Serpent God is just as dark a piece as the first. I have the right as a bonus to a satanic ritual with real prayers. Around 5'20 the riff slows down which gives the impression that it is going to stall as it is slow and painful. The piece ends in a thick, dramatic, suffocating atmosphere.
If after this quasi-neuronal asphyxiation you implore a third title carrying more air and lightness, give up your hopes. leechis even worse than these two predecessors. The sticky lyrics are half-whispered, then a howled song mixes with choruses in clear, deep voices. The dark atmosphere reaches its apogee two minutes before the end of the piece which vanishes as it had begun, on a most disturbing layer of keyboards. I will retain from this piece the diversity and the interweaving of voices, of great art.
Over confused groans of guitars, a bass tuned below sea level hammers the deaf rhythm of Wormtongue . This title seems to me to tell the slow and terrible death of a junky. It moves at 3'30 towards a track with a gloomy melody, without rhythm, before ending on a short cover of the riff.
Into the cryptis built on the alternation between a jerky trashy riff and a demonic lament with a macabre melody. Expect no rest. If you descend into this crypt it is to have your flesh chewed by the undead. The taste buds of balneotherapy are not yet for today.
To complete the visit of the tower of the severed serpent, the slow instrumental Severed gradually gains momentum, becomes electrified. Nice finale that manages to extricate me from hell by leaving traces of deep melancholy mixed with despair in my brain.
Tower Of The Severe Serpentis a very good first album, fruit of experienced musicians and which makes no concessions. The work plunges directly into darkness and will delight audiences hungry for horror, doom, and black metal. "Occult and massive doom metal" could be a pleonasm but in the case of DREAD WITCH these qualifiers are essential, even superimposed on what doom is by nature. metal-integral
