The new band LIKE SAVAGES comes from the US-American state of Massachusetts and is presenting their strange and coolly titled debut album "Peace Amongst The Pieces" to us these days. According to their own statement, the five-piece moves musically somewhere between TOOL and CHEVELLE, which means that the boys should fit perfectly into my musical booty scheme. But of course it is first necessary to check to what extent the self-description corresponds to reality.

And yes, the opener 'Thread The Needle' really makes you think of various modern Prog Metallers and oscillates between groovy verses and sweeping refrains, whereby the guitars are the defining element of the band's sound. They have to be, because the performance takes a lot of getting used to, especially vocally. While the clear vocals in the verses still sound decent, the chorus seems to be right on the edge of the vocal possibilities, which is why I wince more than once at the sight of some subtly off-key tones. It's a good thing that 'Caskets' moves in somewhat lower vocal regions and booms out of the speakers much more compellingly than the opener. It even gets better on 'Dismantle Me' which is really great in terms of guitar work,

Nevertheless, I don't want to crystallize any clear tip or highlight over the rest of the season. Good approaches can be recognized again and again, but in addition to the often somewhat one-dimensional songwriting, it is above all the singing that is a constant disruptive factor for me. Although the frontman, whose name unfortunately couldn't be found on any online presence even after thorough research (what's the point of all this secrecy?), grooves a little better with each additional song, but none of the vocal lines on "Peace Amongst The Pieces" can really convince me. Without knowing the source material, it's impossible to say whether this is ultimately due to the vocal performance or whether the vocals were simply not placed correctly in the mix. But the fact is:

So in the end there are only 6.5 points for "Peace Amongst The Pieces". I can't forgive less, because the band cuts a far too good figure for that, especially on the instrumental front. But more isn't possible either, I simply lack the highlights and really compelling compositions that would cause me to get the CD off the shelf again after this review. powermetal

In a recent interview, singer Mike Z had this to say about “Caskets”, and the meaning behind its lyrics.

"This is an extremely personal song for me lyrically. It is about the loss of my sister. It has to do with every emotion and/or feeling that comes with a sudden and tragic loss. The anger. The guilt. The bargaining. The fear. The emptiness. The strange hope that comes along with it and by that, I mean waking up everyday hoping...thinking you're going to see the person and having to realize you're not. It's about offering yourself instead even though it's too late. It's about the lengths one would go to to bring someone back. I hope that is heard and felt through the words and the music."
