When we think of projects run by just one person, the mind automatically goes to one man and his basement covered in corpse paint and spiked leather bent over an old four track recorder. Yet, with modern recording techniques and computers the ability for a person to sit and do any genre has opened up many avenues and one band are Ivander, the project Ivan Robinson Garcia who has delivered their debut album ‘Inferno 1978’.

As a year, 1978 is a good shout because with ‘Inferno 1978’, Invader get in their time machine and set the controls back to a different era. This is hard rock/heavy metal delivered in the way that was made when the genre ruled the waves and therefore, what the listener gets here is a decent stroll down the vista of familiarity and nostalgia that is thoroughly enjoyable. At times ‘Inferno 1978’ may not have the same face-ripping power of the modern trad metal movement, but that doesn’t mean that ‘Inferno 1978’ is any less enjoyable. The musicianship is top drawer and Garcia really does show the mastery of every instrument here as tracks such as ‘The Ecstasy of Gold’ (no, not that one), ‘Thunder God’ and ‘Metal Escape’ have all the enjoyability of Saxon, Accept and in particular Grim Reaper with Garcia delivering a vocal performance that Steve Grimmett would have been proud of.

‘Inferno 1978’ is a bit of an odd album, on the surface it might only be relatively decent. But, after a few plays, Ivander find themselves to be quite endearing and the listener will thoroughly enjoy it for what it is, a decent heavy metal album that does exactly what it is meant to do without any frills and gimmicks, so what more could you want? - metal-digest
