After the first EP "SGNLS" (2020) and the debut album "The Beginning to an Ending" from the following year, the drone doom/death/post-metallers BORN A GHOST from Tacoma, Washington, continue their atmospheric journey with the 4-track -EP "Stairway To An Empty Room" continued. The year 2023 hasn't even started yet, but I can already report at this point that I've already found my first annual highlight for 2023 today. Partly altered electronically or underpinned with synth sounds, the neurotic loops of "Stairway To An Empty Room" pull one deep down into an ocean of cold, impenetrable blackness.

Shrunk from a quartet to a trio, Howard Taylor Jolin, who takes care of the guitar and synthesizer in addition to the vocal lines, mostly with dark spoken words or rattling doom/death growling, Talmadge Craig Hathaway, who is responsible for the second riff blade, for the programming and the drums is responsible, as well as bass wizard Sergio Vazquez Luna put together a distinctive Ambient Doom Death power pack. There are truly extraordinary sound worlds that the talented multi-instrumentalists BORN A GHOST have created since their formation in 2011. With the stoic dynamics of cooling lava, the Kellerassels primarily remind me of a successful mixture of the British Death/Crusters STRIGOI and the Canadian Black/Doom masters PANZERFAUST.

Within the 19:50 minutes that the dystopian dark "Stairway To An Empty Room" has in store for its listeners, serious, sinister, discordant and disturbingly sludgy doom is delivered. BORN A GHOST use subtle volume dynamics as well as extremely well arranged and evocative rhythms within their leisurely ride through the Doom Metal underworld. With an excellently staged and engagingly atmospheric density, the full budget of the unholy alliance ranges from rather quiet, introverted soundscapes to extroverted, explosive eruptions. As a matter of course, the guitar sound captivates you right from the start. The gravediggers BORN A GHOST recorded, produced, mixed and mastered their second EP at their Milktoast Productions home studio in Tacoma. According to the band, "Stairway To An Empty Room" is a stirring, emotional and spiritual journey through the adversities of drug addiction, suicide and faith.
