With MOOR and their debut album "Viper Kingdom" we are dealing with an album that once again emerges from the Black Metal underground and fulfills almost every cliché that can be placed on a Norwegian project of this kind - rarely with flying colours. The fact that the project comes from Norway and that a number of singles, demos, compilations and splits were released beforehand does not change this fact.
So the dance begins with 'Lepers Among Us' relatively rocky and largely without blast beats, which also applies to the rest of the album. However, the entry through the mentioned track is still relatively inconspicuous. The title track that follows is more convincing, but suffers from the seemingly amateurish execution, which is also evident in 'The Black Foe', for example, which is saved by the great melodies. Apart from that, the album rarely has convincing moments, but mostly only implements a Black Metal defined according to rigid genre boundaries, which is reflected in the many trivial tracks.
The project quotes their supposed heroes in 'Spawn Of Moab', for example, which sounds a lot like MAYHEM. However, the melody arcs in 'The Vile Art Of Necromancy' and 'Land Of The Hairy Barbarians' can partially please the inclined listener and prevent "Viper Kingdom" from being called a complete non-starter.
Fans who buy all Black Metal might be able to grab it, the rest should stay away - this is really nothing new and not really engaging either. A mid- to sub-class album that has probably been released umpteen times underground. - PowerMetal
Release Date: 28/10/2022
FFO: Urgehal, Ragnarok, Carpathian Forest
Short Bio: MOOR is a newly founded black metal one-man band based on the west coast of Norway.
Full-length debut album by MOOR. Recorded over a period of time from august 2021 until December 2021 in The Black Shrine Studios on Norway's west coast. VIPER kingdom serves as the now 1 year old 1mans black metal act MOOR's chaotic beginning. Cold, Aggressive and Melodic are key words to describe the main sound of these songs. And even a bit epic with songs like the title-track it self. However, the songs have a variety of twists and turns and most likely there should be something any black metal/extreme metal fan could enjoy in one or more of these songs.
