LAST RETCH are still quite a blank slate on the big Death Metal tree. A demo from last year is all the Ontario quintet has released so far.

So we come straight to the music, which according to the press information should appeal to fans of CANNIBAL CORPSE, ENTOMBED and BOLT THROWER. Daring, daring, to unpack the really great forefathers with such a newcomer. And to anticipate: LAST RETCH can't (yet?!) come close to the class of these bands. What fits, however, are the set pieces of these models with which the band works. Again and again interspersed high-speed passages (CANNIBAL CORPSE) alternate with very rolling parts (BOLT THROWER). The problem: that doesn't always work. So all 9 songs are kept quite short and the band gets to the point quickly. But the timing just isn't right. Too often the interspersed blast speed attacks seem too intentional and not conducive to the song. LAST RETCH are always strong in the slow or mid-tempo phases. "Dead As Fuck" is an example. Those who get through the first minute of nervous thrashing will be rewarded with a really cool "refrain".

The running time is clear at just under 27 minutes, but it doesn't have a negative effect, because I think that LAST RETCH have shot their powder then. There is nothing to complain about in terms of production, it is powerful but still appropriately mangy.
There are some good songs and riffs, there's no denying that, but to keep up the pace you need to have accents and that's not the case on “Sadism And Severed Heads”. - myrevelations
